By the time it finished its 15 season run, Supernatural ended up as the longest-running, most successful horror-fantasy series in television history. The plot saw two brothers hunting monsters while fighting to save the world from angels and demons alike. Along the way, they made allies, many of who didn’t last as long as fans might have liked.

At the end of their run, the brothers met monsters, angels, and demons, and either worked with or tried to kill them all. They came from a long line of hunters, some blood relatives, and others friends, most of who never made it to the end to see the final fate of the Winchester boys.

10 John Winchester

The first Supernatural episode saw patriarch John Winchester save his two boys after a demon killed his wife. The show then jumped to the present day where John disappeared and Dean called on Sam to help him find their dad.

After the boys spent the first season searching for him, John sacrificed his life to save them and only made a few sporadic appearances in one form or another after that. Jeffrey Dean Morgan went on to enjoy a long run on The Walking Dead as Negan, but Supernatural fans could have used more John Winchester in their lives.

9 Bobby Singer

Bobby Singer was one of John Winchester’s closest allies when he was hunting. When John died, Bobby was there as a surrogate father for Sam and Dean when they needed someone to talk to. This helped him become one of the longest-lasting allies on Supernatural, appearing from Season 1 until he died in Season 7.

Bobby became a vengeful ghost before asking Sam and Dean to let him go. There was an alternate version of him, so Jim Beaver returned for more, but the original Bobby was a huge loss for the show.

8 Ellen Harvelle

Sam and Dean met Ellen Harvelle in the second season, another hunter who worked with their dad. She and her daughter proved to be valuable allies to Sam and Dean that season and then disappeared until Season 5. That was when the most shocking thing happened.

Ellen and her daughter Jo died together. The hellhounds were coming for Sam and Dean and the two gave their own lives to save the boys. Ellen could have survived but she refused to go on without her daughter and Supernatural lost two great characters at once.

7 Charlie Bradbury

Charlie Bradbury was a breath of fresh air for Supernatural and was an instant fan favorite. Portrayed by genre favorite Felicia Day, Charlie originally worked for Dick Roman, but then became a strong ally to the Winchester brothers, as well as the show’s strongest LGBTQ+ representation.

Charlie Bradbury’s death, one of the saddest on the show, angered many fans. She helped the brothers investigate things thanks to her experience as a hacker, and when they found her dead in the bathtub, slaughtered by Eldon Styne, the show lost one of its best characters. Even when an alternate world version arrived, it never replaced the original.

6 Garth Fitzgerald IV

When DJ Qualls showed up as Garth, Supernatural fans weren’t sure what to expect, but he ended up as a fan favorite. Garth was a hunter who called Bobby for help in Season 6 but took a more prominent role in Season 7.

Everything changed in Season 9 when Sam and Dean learned that Bobby became a werewolf. Garth mostly disappeared after that and only popped up in small cameo roles, but was no longer a regular contributor to Supernatural, a big loss for the series.

5 Gabriel

Of the Supernatural archangels God created, Michael and Lucifer were the most notable, but the most entertaining on Supernatural was easily Gabriel. He spent most of his time on Earth playing the role of the Trickster God, similar to Loki. He was an interesting character, refusing to choose sides and just wanting away from the fighting between his brothers.

He also became a friend and ally of the Winchester brothers. Michael ended up killing Gabriel, and the best of the archangels was gone from Supernatural for good.

4 Jo Harvelle

Jo Harvelle died at the same time as her mother, Ellen. However, her loss was harder for the boys to take and she was a huge, heartbreaking loss for Supernatural fans. Jo showed up for the first time with her mom in Season 2 and met Sam and Dean before moving on to become one of their most trusted allies.

Jo separated from the boys later that season and reunited with her mom. This led to Season 5 when they returned. A hellhound tried to kill Dean, and Jo saved him at the cost of her own life. She then died with her mom to save everyone, and this hurt Dean as well as fans who had fallen in love with the young hunter.

3 Missouri

Missouri Moseley is someone who deserved a lot more screentime on Supernatural than she received, and when she left for good, it was way too soon. Portrayed by Loretta Devine, Missouri was a woman who could see ghosts and the future and she was there to help the Winchester’s, both John as well as Sam and Dean.

Every scene she was in was great and she deserved to be around more than she was. Missouri had a small return in Season 13, but it still wasn’t enough.

2 Bela Talbot

Bela Talbot had a lot of promise, especially as a nemesis for Sam and Dean, but her fate did not allow that. Bela made a deal with a Crossroads Demon and made good on her part. However, when she knew her time was coming to an end, she tried to do anything she could to get out of the deal.

This put her in the sights of Sam and Dean, but she was not able to escape her death. It was disappointing, as the character was a lot of fun. Lauren Cohan ended up moving on to The Walking Dead as Maggie.

1 Crowley

Crowley was around longer than almost anyone, but it still seemed his time ended too soon. He was a powerful demon who served as the King of Hell. He was always the smartest man in the room and made life hell for Sam and Dean Winchester. However, something happened to Crowley over time.

When a new writing team arrived on Supernatural, it was almost like a different Crowley, losing much of what made him such a great supporting character. Most Supernatural fans would have liked to see Crowley remain the strong nemesis he was for much of his run and last a little longer to really go out in a blaze of glory.
