Supernatural: 5 Reasons There Should Be A Movie After The Finale (& 5 Reasons Not To)

Supernatural is finally wrapping up after 15 seasons. Fans still want more and that could come in the form of a film. Is it a good idea though?

It has been a long journey for fans of the cult fantasy drama Supernatural, but it was declared last year that the 15th season would be the last. While it might seem like the show has been around forever (and it has, for 15 years is almost a lifetime on television), it is finally time to say goodbye.

However, seeing the kind of cult fanbase that the show developed over the years, which allowed it to run for so long in the first place, one wonders how it might be if the beloved Winchester brothers had their own movie! After giving up on their own happiness and saving the world time and again, one would imagine that they would at least get a film to complement the series. Still, it could be a mistake.

10 To Have: An Ode To The Fans

One of the reasons a movie would be a great idea would be to pay homage to the fans who have supported the series for 15 years.

It’s true that the show ending would drive a lot of fans into tears; bidding adieu to one’s favorite heroes is never easy, and definitely not those who have made the audience laugh, cry and go on the ride of a lifetime with them. As an ode to the fans, the producers and cast might consider returning one last time to say goodbye to the characters they practically grew up playing.

9 Not To Have: The Show Has Run Long Enough

To be honest, 15 years is long enough and much more than what the actors themselves expected from the show, as Ackles and Padalecki have mentioned again and again.

Fans would know that the originally planned series finale was supposed to be the season 5 finale “Swan Song,” way back in 2009. However, fate had other plans and the show ran for 10 more years. It is perhaps time to finally hang up the boots while the craze is still on.

8 To Have: Giving Closure

Getting closure is crucial to both actors and fans. For instance, if one of the boys ended up dying, it wouldn’t be fair to leave the audience wondering what happened to the other one. Or, even if they both die, one might want to find out how they were doing in heaven or hell, wherever they ended up.

It is important that a show as long-running as this does not leave about any holes, and to offer a final closure to the characters that fans have grown to love, one might consider a film.

7 Not To Have: Enough With The Forced Storylines

It’s true that for several seasons now, the seasonal storylines have felt somewhat forced as if the writers were running out of ideas.

From the Leviathans, the Darkness to Apocalypse world, and now God himself, the storylines have spiraled into the more and more bizarre, as have the season finales. After all, Dean killing Death himself was unthinkable, even by Supernatural’s standards.

6 To Have: Life After Death

If there has been anything final about Supernatural for all these years, it is that death is not final. A pattern that the writers developed was to bring characters back from the dead, right, left, and center. Sam, Dean, and Castiel have returned from the dead well over a hundred times, combined.

So it might not be stretch to imagine that even if the brothers, and Cas, were to die at the end of the series, there might be a way to bring them back.

5 Not To Have: After God, What/Who?

In the season 14 finale, Chuck/God revealed himself to be the ultimate nemesis, having been quite obsessed with the brothers, using them for his personal entertainment.

The brothers are now gearing up to fight God in season 15, either to kill him or at least to lock him away–time will tell. But whatever it is they do, it makes sense that a series that has had the heroes fight the Devil himself, and God’s sister, would snuff out the lights with the Creator himself. After all, what or who else is left to fight after God?

4 To Have: An Alternate Reality

Alternate reality is something the series has dwelt on again and again, and it is an easy enough thing to show in a series that is based on fantasy, magic, and all things supernatural.

Over the years, Sam and Dean have had their alternate reality versions. Some fun, some oblivious to their true identity, some toxic, and others who have traveled back in time or into the future for one reason or another. It might bring relief to the fans if the Winchesters were placed in some such context; they would get a taste of the Sam and Dean they know, but also get to see them in a different avatar.

3 Not To Have: Leave The Actors Be

From season 14 onwards, the showrunners declared that they would settle for a 20-episode season instead of the usual 23 or 24 episode arc that the series followed. This was to offer the actors time to be with their families.

The actors have spent the better part of every year shooting in Vancouver for the past 15 years and rumor had it that all the three leads, whether Ackles, Padalecki or Collins, wanted to shorten their schedules to spend time with their kids. Keeping this in mind, it might be sensible not to drag them out once more to shoot an entire film which would naturally take several months to wrap up.

2 To Have: Time For Spin-offs

Of course, the best reason to bring the characters back is to have a prequel or a sequel to their narrative, or at the very least, a spin-off. It is a known fact that the showrunners planned spin-offs over the course of the show, which failed to take off. There is even an allusion to the failed spin-offs in the ongoing season 15, mentioned by none other than God.

But a sequel based on the life of one or other of the characters, say, Jack, Castiel, or the wayward sisters, would still be interesting. Better still, a fun prequel could have Bobby and Rufus going on hunts of their own, and an emotional one might focus on a younger Dean taking care of a baby Sam while learning to hunt at the same time. The possibilities are endless.

1 Not To Have: There’ll Be Peace When You Are Done

Actor Jared Padalecki has stated that he would like the brothers to go out all guns blazin’ and that should be that. This would, honestly, be the ultimate reason to not have a film after the series bows out.

For the brothers who have sacrificed family and friendship for the greater good, putting their own lives at risk every time to save the world from one apocalyptic event after another, it would be poetic justice if they were to die doing what they did, and finally find some much-deserved peace.
