Every successful TV series has that one dynamic that fans love to follow, and these characters are given trials and tribulations that highlight their chemistry. In the CW’s Supernatural, this aspect is fulfilled by the relationship between Dean and Castiel.

There have been many funny moments with these two as well, but the final season has put them at odds that seem to be on course to last till the series finale by the looks of it. Since the show wants fans to feel the pain the characters are feeling, here are five things each of Dean and Castiel have done that has hurt the other.

10 Castiel: Hide Jack’s Truth

It wasn’t really Castiel’s fault that Jack ended up killing Mary (that, too, was an accident), but Dean didn’t care about the specifics of it all and put Castiel at fault for not telling him and Sam that there was something wrong with Jack.

Castiel did make a blunder by keeping Jack’s more destructive tendencies to himself after he realized the soulless Jack might be a problem, although he might’ve been remembering Dean’s penchant for killing stuff he found dangerous. Regardless, not informing Dean of Jack’s truth was what the former ultimately held against Castiel.

9 Dean: Try To Force Castiel To Kill Jack With Him

When Jack did accidentally ends up taking Mary’s life, Dean was beside himself with vengeance and took it upon himself to end Jack’s threat even though the boy still saw Dean as family. From that point, though, Dean had Jack’s death on his mind and flaunted in Castiel’s face that he would kill the boy who was Castiel’s adoptive son.

When Castiel told Dean he would stand in his way, Dean wasn’t shaken in the slightest and told Castiel he could either get on board with killing Jack or walk away. Basically, Dean wanted to take Castiel’s son’s life in revenge for the boy taking Dean’s mothers’ life.

8 Castiel: Threaten To Throw Dean Back To Hell

In Season 4, Dean wasn’t impressed by the methods the angels took, seeing them as being no better than demons as the angels used force to cause fear in their opponents. He also took issue with Castiel giving him tasks that he didn’t want to do.

However, Castiel grew tired of Dean’s rebellious nature and hit him where it hurt by bringing up Dean’s time in Hell. Castiel, knowing the endless torment Dean had undergone down there, hit the latter up by promising him he would throw Dean back down there if he didn’t show Castiel respect. The fear in Dean’s eyes was enough to tell us he was scared beyond argument.

7 Dean: Try To Get Death To Kill Castiel

When Castiel took in all the souls of Purgatory, Dean and company figured he was too far gone to be convinced back into their group and bound Death to do their bidding. Dean’s order to Death was to kill Castiel where he stood, greatly offending the angel.

The reason for Castiel’s scandalized response was due to him having spared Dean the previous episode because of their former bond, but here Dean was making Death his puppet and commanding him to kill Castiel. It would’ve happened too had Castiel not undone Death’s shackles.

6 Castiel: Give Dean A No Holds Barred Beatdown

There came a point in Season 5 when Dean grew tired of defying the angels because the apocalypse was getting out of hand and running away from the angels seemed impossible. So, Dean decided he would agree for Michael to possess him.

At this point, Castiel arrived and flayed Dean mercilessly, leaving him a bloody mess. Castiel’s argument was that Dean was abandoning their cause when he had turned his back on the angels because of his trust in Dean. He wasn’t wrong, but the beatdown he gave Dean certainly was hard to watch.

5 Dean: Force Castiel To Leave The Bunker

Gadreel was an impostor angel who had taken on the identity of the deceased Ezekiel, fooling Dean into letting him possess Sam. Gadreel came to the conclusion that the recently human Castiel would be able to deduce his identity and asked Dean to get rid of him.

Dean, not thinking of the fact that Castiel didn’t have any more powers, told him flat that he wasn’t welcome to stay at the bunker. Castiel was then forced to get a job and find a seedy place to stay, all without being given any reasoning from Dean as to why he was being kicked out.

4 Castiel: Almost Kill Dean

In Season 8, Castiel’s mind was being controlled by Naomi, who gathered intel by making Castiel spy on the Winchesters while being unaware of this fact. Eventually, Naomi saw the Winchesters as more of a liability than an asset and gave the order to Castiel to kill them.

Caught off-guard, Dean was then handed a merciless beating by Castiel, who reduced Dean to a bloody stain and took his time to ensure Dean was pretty much dead already before almost landing the fatal blow. Eventually, though, he was able to fight the mental conditioning, but not before he’d given Dean the beating of his life.

3 Dean: Cut Castiel Out Of His Life

After God unleashed Hell on Earth and the Winchesters and Castiel had to clean up that mess, Dean’s resentment toward Castiel grew further, to the point where he couldn’t even look at his former friend anymore. Once the problem with Hell was dealt with, Castiel correctly surmised that Dean was still angry at him for Jack’s turn for the worst and that Dean didn’t care anymore.

This effectively meant Dean wanted Castiel gone, and the most recent episode confirmed that Dean still had no care for Castiel as it was only Sam who tried to contact him. From the looks of it, a hurt Castiel wiped away a tear when he heard Dean say this over the phone.

2 Castiel: Abandon Dean In Purgatory

Dick Roman’s death caused an explosion that brought both Castiel and Dean with him to Purgatory. In this realm, they were special treats for the monsters due to their status as a human and an angel. Castiel, thinking he might be a beacon to attract more foes, teleported away once they were there.

However, he overlooked the fact that Dean was surrounded by multiple red-eyed monsters who seemed prepared to feed on him. Castiel might have run for Dean’s benefit, but there’s no denying that Dean could very well have been ripped to shreds then and there and got out lucky.

1 Dean: Blame Castiel For The Deaths Of Mary And Rowena

Dean wasn’t just angry for Castiel’s role in bringing the worst out of God, as his main anger came from the idea that Castiel was responsible for the death of Mary. Making things worse was when Castiel killed the traitor Belphagor, which led to Rowena having to sacrifice herself.

Now having played an inadvertent role in the deaths of two women close to the Winchesters, Castiel was chastised by Dean as the “something wrong” that always happened when things went bad. This was worse than Dean potentially hitting Castiel, as the angel’s spirit was shattered when he realized his former friend was pretty much calling him a heartless killer.
