Supernatural’s “Just My Imagination” introduced Sam’s old imaginary friend Sully for one of the show’s most unique episodes. Supernatural filled in the gap left behind by The X-Files when it debuted in 2005. The series focuses on the adventures of sibling duo Sam and Dean Winchester, who were raised from a young age to hunt and kill supernatural creatures and demons. Episodes could range from goofy to horrifying, and over the course of fifteen seasons it developed a devoted following.
This is largely down to a great cast, with Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki (House Of Wax) forming a very convincing brotherly bond. Supernatural also has countless fan favorite supporting players, including angel Castiel, Bobby Singer, Charlie Bradbury and Crowley. After 15 years on the air the Winchesters will finally get a break when the series comes to an end in late 2020, though there’s always the possibility of a future revival or spinoff.
Supernatural season 11 had some great episodes like “Don’t Call Me Shurley” – which revealed something major about author Chuck Shurley – but another favorite is “Just My Imagination.” This episode opens with a little girl’s imaginary friend – a mix between a man and unicorn – being brutally murdered, and soon Sam is approached by his old “imaginary” pal Sully (Nate Torrence) for help stopping the killer.
Supernatural “Just My Imagination” was directed by Richard Speight Jr. – who also played Gabriel on the show – and is one of the season’s standout episodes. It’s not scary in the least, but it’s not really supposed to be either. Instead, it blends humor with some surprisingly touching scenes, like providing insight into Sam’s upbringing, where he was frequently left alone by Dean and their father while they were out on hunts. It reveals Sam almost ran away with Sully’s encouragement to turn him away from the hunting life, but Sam eventually rejected and forgot about him instead; Sully later admits he was wrong as Sam grew up to be a hero.
Supernatural’s “Just My Imagination” has fun with the concept too, nodding to the likes of Drop Dead Fred and wallowing in dark humor, like a mother unknowingly smearing the shiny blood of the dead unicorn man all over her daughter’s bedroom. It climaxes in an emotional way that links to Sully’s pas and even gives the killer a decent motive. This episode also gave Dylan Everett another chance to show off his eerily accurate Jensen Ackles impression as young Dean, which was previously seen in episodes like “About A Boy.”
