Bringing the worst about the Winchesters to the spotlight probably isn’t what fans want to be reading at the moment, considering Supernatural is near its end, but it pays well to know that even your favorite heroes aren’t completely good guys.

We’ve previously looked into how the boys could very well be the true villains of the series, so here we’ll be recapping the things they did that were morally the worst. You’ll find incidents that affected other people’s lives on this list, but we’ve also given consideration to the things all the Winchesters did wrong that affected them on a personal level.

10 Using People For Their Own Gains (Then Abandoning Them)

It’s happened time and again, and the crazy part is that the Winchesters don’t even realize it, but they have exploited help out of others without extending the same courtesy. It’s a pretty long list of people too, ranging from prophets, monsters, demons, angels, and humans.

Whenever these beings are useful, the Winchesters have been happy to keep them around, only to abandon them once their usefulness has run its course. For instance, they kept Kevin safe when they needed him to decipher the tablets, but didn’t bother to check up on him when he was a ghost and was stuck in the Veil.

9 Sam’s Behavior Toward John

Sam was never one for the hunter lifestyle, and he took out his frustrations with being stuck in it on his father. Sure, John messed up pretty big, but he wasn’t half as bad toward Sam as he was with Dean, and was more protective of his younger son. Yet Sam didn’t appreciate his father’s sacrifices.

Instead, he would openly shout at John, tell him how he had failed as a father, make him feel guilty about Mary’s death, and eventually broke his heart by leaving for college and cutting John out of his life.

8 Frequently Killing Innocents And Letting Evil Ones Live

Not all of the people the Winchesters have killed deserved their fate, despite how the show would want to portray them. For instance, Dean took the life of the Phoenix Elias Finch, even though Elias had been wrongly accused of killing his wife and was only taking revenge on the real bad guys who did that to her.

Likewise, they’ve exorcised demons out of hosts when the person in possession is important to them, but kill those whom they have no use for despite those people also being innocent. At one point, Dean killed a monster and left her child an orphan, while he easily let his pal Benny the vampire live ⁠— and even provided him with blood bags.

7 Killing Their Own Grandfather

After Crowley resurrected the Winchester boys’ grandfather Samuel Campbell, the latter got into cahoots with the demon to bring Mary back. Unfortunately, this meant betraying his own grandsons. However, even though Samuel wasn’t a good guy, by taking his life, Sam and Dean showed they were hardly better than him.

Although Sam shot his grandfather because the khan worm was controlling him, he could’ve easily subdued Samuel and ejected the worm out. Not only that, but he and Dean then disrespected Samuel’s body by firstly cutting into his skull and then repeatedly electrocuting it to confirm if the khan worm was still there.

6 Everything That Happened To Adam

All three Winchester men are responsible for what happened to the youngest male member of the family. It starts with John, who deliberately kept Adam away from the reality of the world, something that led to the poor boy being devoured by monsters as he didn’t have any fighting skills.

It got worse with Sam and Dean, who repeatedly abandoned Adam; first when Michael possessed him, then when they fell in Lucifer’s cage, followed by leaving him in there despite numerous chances to rescue him. When Adam got out on his own, they didn’t take any time to help him with his mental trauma, and tried to use him now that he was relevant to them again.

5 Soulless Sam’s Crimes

During his time without a soul, Sam flayed Officer Atkins, to the point where Atkins was a bloody mess that Sam abandoned by the side of the road. Another, more tragic, example is of Sheriff Roy Dobbs, a man whom Sam used as live bait when by fooling him into heading toward an arachne, which almost ate him alive.

Rather than save Roy, Sam left him and other victims to rot, trapped in the arachne’s webs. Roy ended up becoming an arachne himself, and his eventual death meant he was stuck forever in Purgatory due to Sam’s actions.

4 The Collateral Damage Of Their Lies

On the face of it, being lied to won’t sound like that big of a deal, but Sam and Dean’s lies have led to other people getting hurt. One of them was Martin, who was mauled to death by Benny, a direct result of Dean hiding the vampire away from Sam.

Other consequences of lies include the death of Oskar, a boy Sam had Rowena secretly kill to complete a spell to remove Dean’s Mark of Cain. John’s many lies to his sons resulted in them being unaware of his activities, and more than a few occasions had John’s monster victims seek revenge on Sam and Dean.

3 Mary’s Cold Nature Toward Her Sons

Although one might consider Mary’s deal with Azazel as being the worst for Sam and Dean at large, she messed up with her sons a whole lot more when she was resurrected. As it turned out, she had very little love to give them.

Dean was distraught when she up and left them shortly after returning, with the lack of connection greatly affecting Sam as well when he admitted he hated the fact that he didn’t have a real relationship with her. It was also the reason why Dean and Castiel fell out, as Mary’s premature death led to Dean ruing how she never got around to loving them fully.

2 John’s Emotional Abuse Of Dean

John might be a tougher fighter compared to most, but he was needlessly hard on his eldest son. From Dean’s own recollection, it seems as if John might have been emotionally abusive to him. This was evidenced when Dean recalled that John wouldn’t allow him to do normal things and would force him to fight monsters instead ⁠— before he was even 10 years old.

While John kept Sam shielded to an extent and let him retain some of his innocence, Dean was constantly treated like a soldier who got zero say even if his own life was in danger. This kind of upbringing permanently affected Dean, as he developed lifelong trust issues and an inability to have lasting relationships.

1 Causing The Apocalypse

We can list all the morally wrong things that the Winchesters did, but the top spot has to belong to their hand in causing the apocalypse. This event caused numerous deaths around the world, and both brothers were central to it.

Dean is mainly to blame here, seeing as his deal to bring Sam from the dead led to him going to Hell and breaking the first seal to Lucifer’s cage. Sam isn’t without blame either, as his relentless pursuit of Lilith’s death was the final act needed to bring Lucifer back. The following seasons have dealt with the fallout from the apocalypse starting, meaning all the bad that’s happened since is also due to the Winchesters. It just doesn’t get worse than that.
