Supernatural’s “Out With The Old” feels like something of an homage to Friday The 13th: The Series. The 1980s was something of a boom period for horror movies, as evidenced by the success of the A Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th franchises. At the height of their success both series also received TV spinoffs, with Freddy’s Nightmares debuting in 1988. Despite a stylish pilot directed by Tobe Hooper that detailed Freddy’s origin, the series was infamously cheap and rarely scary, and the anthology approach often meant Freddy just introduced episodes rather than taking part in them.

Faring better was Friday The 13th: The Series, which took the somewhat controversial decision to divorce itself from the movies and Jason Voorhees. Instead, the show revolved around an antique store that once sold cursed objects, and its inheritors trying to get those items back, which includes everything from cursed dolls to gloves that can heal someone’s illness by transferring it to someone else. It was a creative little horror series, with David Cronenberg even helming the season one episode “Faith Healer.”

Friday The 13th: The Series ultimately ran for three seasons before being cancelled and is now a cult show in its own right. The premise of Supernatural’s season 7 episode “Out With The Old” feels somewhat inspired by the series too, as it opens with a ballerina who dances herself to death after buying some new slippers. The Winchester siblings are soon on the case and trace the slippers back to an antique store.

They find the owner’s mother kept multiple cursed objects stored away, so it’s up to the brothers to swiftly recover the items the owner sold without knowing their power. This leads to the nastiest scene of Supernatural’s “Out With The Old” as a woman downs boiling hot water from a cursed kettle. After some other near misses, they gather all the objects back, but the store owner reveals his mother died shortly after agreeing to sell the store to a realtor who is aggressively buying up property in the town, and after a bit of digging, they find Joyce and her meek assistant George are actually Leviathans.

This nasty duo also learns the Winchesters are in town and try to lure them into a trap, only for George to betray Joyce and letting the Winchester’s behead her. He did this because he was tired of how she treated him and, more perversely, he wants to eat her corpse. Supernatural’s “Out With The Old” ends with George revealing the Leviathans are buying a property in town because they want to research how to cure cancer, which just raises more questions about their motives. Overall “Out With The Old” was an entertaining entry, though it was more fun when the boys were dealing with the cursed objects and not the irritating villains at the center of the plot.
