As the month of October – and by extension, Halloween – draws closer, veteran gamers with a yen for the uncanny could do worse than to check out these riveting, spine-tingling Survival Horror-themed games. Some of the following titles are already available for gamers to enjoy, while other games are set to come out around October. Each one listed below exemplifies a certain brand of horror, testing the mettle of livestreamers with innovative mechanics and tension-building atmosphere.

The Survival Horror genre, much like the RPG genre, is a loose and fluid concept, absorbing elements from other games like a life-draining vampire and contaminating other genres like an alien zombie virus. If there’s any core theme shared between all Survival Horror games, it’s this: the player character is not a superhero. In the context of their perilous problems, they’re mortal, flawed, vulnerable, desperate, terrified, and in over their heads. Even when Survival Horror protagonists have heavy weapons (like in Resident Evil) or supernatural abilities (like in Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem), they still need to sneak, run, hide, and husband resources in order to escape the nightmare they’ve stumbled into.

Three of the following games (Left 4 Dead 2, Darkwood, and Carrion) are already available for play, while two games (Amnesia: Rebirth and The Medium) are currently set to come out close to Halloween. Most of the under-development horror games not mentioned here (Resident Evil VIII: Village being one anticipated title) have been excluded due to their 2021 release date.

Amnesia: Rebirth

The third installment in Frictional Games’ Amnesia Trilogy, Amnesia: Rebirth, revolves around the harrowing journey of one Tasi Trianon, who wakes up in the desert of Algeria with no memory of the recent past. Pursued by uncanny monsters, Tasi must descend into an ancient, geometrically disturbing ruin, solving puzzles and reconstructing her fragmented memories of what transpired over the the past few days – memories she might be better off not remembering. Fans of the series hope the October 20 release of Amnesia: Rebirth will reveal truths only hinted at in previous Amnesia games, such as the true nature of the reality-warping Orbs and the civilization who created them.

The Medium

A survival horror/mystery game set to be released in late 2020, The Medium focuses, not so surprisingly, on a psychic investigator trying to uncover the dark secrets at the heart of an abandoned, decaying vacation resort. The unique draw of The Medium is its dual-world split screen gameplay, where the main character’s physical form and her astral projection navigate two parallel worlds at the same time; one world is a crumbling, empty building, the other a spirit world overgrown with rot and strange hive-like growths. To progress through the game and survive the threat of the Maw, players must solve puzzles and acquire resources in each world.

Carrion

Carrion is an inversion of the survival horror genre where the player takes on the role of the grotesque monster humans scream and flee from. In this 2D Metroid-style platformer, a grotesque, shapeshifting, biomass-absorbing monster escapes from containment, rampaging through a hermetically-sealed research facility in a bid for freedom. Over the course of the game, gamers evade sentry robots, turrets, and flamethrower-toting security forces while unlocking visceral abilities such as web-shooting, optical camouflage, and body-snatching.

Darkwood

Developers at Acid Wizard Studios made the conscious decision to avoid any and all use of “jump-scares” in Darkwood, an underrated top-down survival horror game released back in 2017. The horror of Darkwood, a game about a lone survivor trying to survive a monster-haunted forest, isn’t built out of shock moments where a monster leaps out and goes ‘boo,’ but on creeping dread and atmosphere. By day, the protagonist wanders through the forest, interacting with the strange mutated inhabitants, scrounging supplies, and pursuing the malicious doctor who stole a valuable key from him. By night, huddled in his house, the protagonist barricades their house and prays that the nightmares outside stay away.

Left 4 Dead 2: The Last Stand Update

Even 11 years after release, Left 4 Dead 2 stands out as a masterpiece of co-op gameplay and action-horror narrative, with players taking on the role of survivors trying to escape zombies hordes or mutated zombies trying to pick the survivors off one by one, while a nebulous “AI Director” throws guns, ammo, and armies of the undead into the maps whenever dramatically appropriate. The latest update to Left 4 Dead 2, The Last Stand, is a massive community-made expansion that introduces new arenas, a brand new campaign, and new assets ranging from weapons like shovels and pitchforks to new Infected, graphical updates, and the addition of weapons from the Counter Strike: Source video game. While not a survival horror game in the traditional sense, the Last Stand update is still a great way for friends to create their own zombie survival scenarios, putting their claims of being smarter than the idiots in zombie movies to the test.
