Tom Westman appeared on Survivor seasons 10 and 20. Here’s what he’s been up to since winning season 10. Tom first appeared on the show in Survivor: Palau in 2005. The firefighter from New York impressed viewers and players by taking leadership of the Koror tribe.

He led them on an unexpected winning streak, resulting in him being one of the most likable contestants of all time. Tom also tied the record for winning Immunity Challenges. He made it to the final two and beat Katie Gallagher in a 6-1 vote, taking the title of Sole Survivor. He was the first Survivor winner in his 40s and won the most challenges of any Sole Survivor throughout the show. Tom returned to the franchise in 2010 to compete in the Heroes vs. Villains season. He started the season as one of the Heroes, but was not very successful. He was eliminated in 16th place. Tom has always been highly athletic, and held the school record for pole vault in high school. When he went on Survivor, his hobbies included skiing, scuba diving and golfing. He was also pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in history at Queen’s College.

Tom’s life changed after winning Survivor: Palau. He used the money he won to retire from the New York Fire Department and focus on motivational speaking and charity. He currently lives with his wife, Bernadette, in Sayville, NY. They have three children, Megan, 24, Declan, 22, and Conor, 20. Megan contracted meningitis when she was very young, and is now deaf. Tom has worked with charities to raise money for deaf children because of this. He credits Bernadette for much of his success on Survivor, and says being away from his family was the hardest part of the competition. “She’s the one who pushed me to go,” he said to CBS in 2005, “Thought she was trying to get rid of me for 40 days or so, but it was just so unbelievable, from getting a chance to play a game like this and then getting to win it. It’s a dream.”

Tom and his family have been quite private after his second Survivor turn. He expressed wanting to be able to live a normal life after his win, and it seems like he has succeeded. Besides retiring, paying off his mortgage, and paying for his children’s education, he hasn’t taken much advantage of Survivor fame. Tom doesn’t have an Instagram account and hasn’t used his Twitter since 2013. We wish Tom all the best in his quiet, post-Survivor life. It sounds like life has been good to him and his family.
