Spoilers ahead for Suicide Squad #7!

Amanda Waller, head of the Suicide Squad, has been pursuing Swamp Thing for a purpose that could threaten the entire DC Universe. Waller has sent operatives after Swamp Thing, and her reasons for doing so are revealed in Suicide Squad #7, on sale now in print and digital. Waller wants to turn Swamp Thing into a tool, one she can use against the heroes and villains of the DC Universe.

Amanda Waller is the iron-willed director of Task Force X, better known as Suicide Squad. Waller always has grand ambitions, but in recent months, she has made some truly bold moves. First, she makes a play for power on Earth-3, attempting to take it over and sealing it off from the rest of the multiverse as a way of containing its evil. She has created a new clone of Superboy to assist in her attempts to gain power. Meanwhile, Waller has also been hunting Levi Kamen, the newest Swamp Thing, sending the Peacemaker, one of her top operatives, after him. Waller’s reasons for wanting the Swamp Thing on the Squad were a mystery, until now – and it could spell doom for the DC Universe. Suicide Squad #7 is written by Robbie Thompson, with art by Eduardo Pansica, inks by Julio Ferreira, colors by Marcelo Maiolo, and letters by Wes Abbott.

Peacemaker is questioning Waller’s intentions regarding Swamp Thing. She tells him that Swamp Thing’s powers allow him to communicate with every plant on Earth, or “every green inch,” as she puts it. Waller wants to find a way to take this ability and create a surveillance network out of it. Such a network would give Amanda Waller access to nearly everything happening on Earth, or the ability to “[know] everything.” She then uses this idea to appeal to the Peacemaker’s irrational desire for peace by asking him to imagine “all the peace” the network could bring.

Amanda Waller is ruthless, having no qualms about planting explosive devices in Squad members’ heads. Yet desiring to take one of Swamp Thing’s natural gifts and twist it into a tool to be used against his fellow heroes is a step above anything Waller has done before. The idea of Waller having access to such a surveillance system is terrifying, not only for the Suicide Squad, but the rest of the DC Universe as well. Amanda Waller would not only have a system in place that would give her total control over the Squad; it could also give her access to information she could use as leverage to blackmail others into working with her or joining the Squad. It also gives insight into Waller’s worldview, where she views people in utilitarian terms, as “assets.”

Swamp Thing’s ability to communicate with plant life is a gift and potentially incredibly valuable asset, but the Suicide Squad’s Amanda Waller wishes to pervert it into a weapon to be used against the DC Universe.
