It’s finally here! The end of Chapter 2: Season 2, and if Monday’s in-game event was anything to go by, this week is going to be a big one.

This week might well be the biggest of 2020 so far for Fortnite. Epic made sure the week got off to a groundbreaking start by holding its first, and what might be its only, live in-game event of 2020. The Device Midas has been moving around and taking care of was finally switched on, and it had an incredible effect on the island.

The hatches surrounding The Agency rose up out of the water and appeared to harness the power of The Device. Oh, and The Device laid waste to The Agency as it rose up out of the ground. After some back and forth, The Device turned The Storm into water, complete with sharks.

Unfortunately, there’s no sign of SpongeBob Squarepants. Not yet anyway. Stepping into the wall of water just has the same effect as The Storm it replaced. As for what’s next, players are now sitting in that anticipatory stopgap between what was a monumental event and the transition from Season 2 into Season 3. That change will happen on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, during which there will be a little bit of downtime.

Hopefully, not as much downtime as players were subject to when Fortnite was sucked into a black hole. Since the transitional live event has happened ahead of time this go-around, chances are downtime will be minimal. However, as per usual, Battle Passes will be reset, and it will be interesting to see whether the water-based storm currently in place still remains once the new season begins.

As for what happens then, that is anyone’s guess. There’s a possibility Fortnite has a resident crossover character akin to Deadpool who has hung around for the duration of Season 2. While some players continue to hope for the arrival of SpongeBob, there is also a theory that Aquaman is on his way to the now very wet island.
