Krysty Wilson-Cairns, Taika Waititi’s co-writer on his upcoming Star Wars movie, gives an update on the script and how she’s prepared for it. Following the divisive Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, the franchise from a galaxy far, far away has largely paused its big screen efforts to focus on television. The success of The Mandalorian spurred a greater output over on Disney+, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any more Star Wars movies in the future. A good number remain in development, though when they will arrive in theaters and what they will look like remains to be seen.

Waititi, best known for helming movies like Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, first dipped his toes into the Star Wars universe by guest-starring in and directing an episode of The Mandalorian. When it came to him creating a Star Wars movie, he first played coy with the idea before being confirmed as one of Lucasfilm’s upcoming directors in the spring of 2020. Little is known about this project, save for that Waititi is writing it alongside Wilson-Cairns, whose own credits include 1917 and new release Last Night in Soho.

It’s Wilson-Cairns who gave an update on this mystery Star Wars project while talking to Variety’s Marc Malkin recently. She confirmed the script is coming along nicely and that it’s all about taking the time required to make it perfect. “You have to research, study and spend a lot of time to get it right,” Wilson-Cairns said. “It’s really important to honor not only your commitment to it but also to the legions of fans out there.” It helps that she’s a longtime Star Wars fan who even has Darth Maul pajamas.

Dedicated members of the Star Wars fanbase will likely be comforted to hear Wilson-Cairns and Waititi feel they have a commitment to fans, since some of Lucasfilm’s recent cinematic efforts have run afoul of a few longtime supporters. Wilson-Cairns and Waititi should feel free to do whatever they wish creatively with the franchise, and they definitely shouldn’t tailor every decision to what they believe fans will want. At the same time, it’s nice to know this new Star Wars movie won’t entirely leave the audience behind.

For his part, Waititi has already joked that his Star Wars will ruin the entire franchise. With the film still in the scriptwriting stage, it seems unlikely he and Wilson-Cairns will reveal any concrete details about characters or plot anytime soon. Next on the Lucasfilm roster is Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, which is set for release in late 2023. Waititi and Wilson-Cairns’ project can arrive sometime after, though it also has to be slotted in alongside Kevin Feige’s, Rian Johnson’s, and J.D. Dillard’s. In other words, things are quiet for Star Wars movies right now, but that will definitely be changing in the future.
