Taika Waititis Star Wars Movie Tease Suggests Avoiding Ragnarok Mistake

Taika Waititi’s upcoming Star Wars film has an opportunity to play to the director’s strengths and avoid an issue that many viewers had with Thor: Ragnarok. Waititi is one of the latest directors to have his name attached to an upcoming Star Wars project, although little about the in-development film is currently known. While Waititi’s most popular work is undoubtedly his contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s much more to the director and his style than his work on the third Thor movie.

Over the last few years, Taika Waititi has solidified himself as one of the most unique and quirky directors in modern Hollywood. After earning acclaim for 2014’s What We Do in the Shadows, Waititi went on to direct Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) and Jojo Rabbit (2019), both of which featured the director’s trademark fusion of offbeat humor and emotional drama. But even before Jojo Rabbit, the stylish Waititi caught the eye of Disney, directing the aforementioned Ragnarok in 2017 and returning to the MCU in 2022 for the fourth Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder. He’s also stepped into the world of Lucasfilm, as the self-described Star Wars superfan directed and had a small role in The Mandalorian.

However, Waititi is also developing a feature Star Wars movie. When asked about injecting the still-untitled movie with his trademark style in a recent interview Waititi responded, “I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films. I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!'” This answer seems to imply that Waititi intends to take the viewer on a ride that will elicit genuine emotion and perhaps even tug at the heart strings. If true, then Waititi’s Star Wars film might very well avoid one of the biggest criticisms of Thor: Ragnarok: its tendency to undercut genuine emotional moments for the sake of a gag or joke.

Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok is easily the most comedic of the MCU’s films, almost completely eschewing the grandiose sense of scale and drama that was found in the first two Thor entries. While every Thor movie has its comedic moments, Ragnarok obviously took far more cues from the comedic tone of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy than it did from either Thor or Thor: The Dark World. The result was a movie that often sidestepped genuine drama and focused more on goofiness and extended gags.

While this approach helped make the film a financially successful crowd-pleaser, many viewers who’d followed Waititi’s work noticed that the director’s skillful blend of comedy and drama was largely missing. Taika Waititi’s MCU entry might’ve had visual flourish and a great sense of humor, but his true strengths as a filmmaker weren’t employed to their full potential. However, if Waititi is given the freedom to indulge in the emotional drama missing from Ragnarok in his new Star Wars film, it’s entirely possible that the acclaimed filmmaker could craft an emotionally resonant, deeply moving, and uniquely special entry in the long-running franchise.
