British game studio Brightdog Games recently announced its upcoming tabletop RPG campaign setting Tales of Esgar for the 5th Edition of the world’s most popular roleplaying game. The studio will be launching the Tales of Esgar Kickstarter campaign sometime in 2021.

The Tales of Esgar 5th Edition SRD campaign is a fantasy setting that draws inspiration from a wide variety of fictional and factional sources, including Earthsea, Egypt, Britain’s Celtic era, and Tolkien’s Middle-earth. The new setting will also comprise exclusive player options and game mechanics to offer a whole new immersive adventure experience for tabletop roleplaying gamers.

According to the Road to Esgar #1 – Producer’s Letter written by Brightdog Games Creative Director James Perry, Tales of Esgar is set to have “a Game Master’s Guide, Player’s Guide, multiple Region Guides, Campaigns and Modules, and so much more.” Perry said to expect more info in the coming months leading up to the launch of the Kickstarter campaign.

One of the most interesting particular aspects Perry does mention is the Cultures feature. According to the Tales of Esgar team, “Our Cultures replace traditional ‘race’ options, and all our classes will be unique to Tales of Esgar (no SRD classes/subclasses in sight!)”

Though the Tales of Esgar Kickstarter campaign is still a ways off, the Brightdog team does have some things scheduled to release this year. The first product is Lore of the Sea Elves, a campaign module currently being developed for Tales of Esgar. The module will introduce the world of Esgar to players, and according to Perry, “will introduce the Mórdaen, a clan of Sea Elves” who comes with a complete historical chronicle of their own.

The module will also detail the lore of various lands and citizens of Esgar, along with “a wealth of geographical information for the Sea Elf realm of Hún Lomath and their city of Mórdros.” Capping off the module will be a 5-part adventure “that will take you from the borders of Hún Lomath, across the twilight shores of the southern sea, to Mórdros and beyond.” According to Perry, The Lore of the Sea Elves module is suitable for 5th edition campaigns and is scheduled to be released later in 2020, barring any further coronavirus pandemic interruptions.

To get TTRPG players even more interested, Brightdog will be releasing an official Tales of Esgar soundtrack to accompany the game. You can hear a sample of their first released track now, titled “Song of the Sea Elves”. Take note, all other tabletop roleplaying game companies, as this should become a standard practice for all new tabletop IPs.
