The fan backlash to season 2 of Ted Lasso may hurt its chances at the Emmy Awards. Season 1 of Apple TV+’s hit comedy series aired in August of last year and was met with record-breaking viewing numbers for the fledgling streaming service. The show was nominated for a slew of awards, including a Golden Globe win for its lead star Jason Sudeikis. At the Emmy Awards coming up next month, Ted Lasso has garnered a total of 20 nominations.

The series centers around its titular American football coach, who is hired to manage a professional football club part of England’s Premier League. This is later revealed to be an attempt by the club’s owner, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), at sabotaging the team, which ultimately fails as the perpetually positive Ted Lasso earns the love and respect of everyone around him. Other than Sudeikis and Waddingham, the show stars Emmy-nominated actors Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift. While season 1 seemed to be universally beloved, some fans are claiming season 2 has experienced a sharp decline in quality.

According to former THR editor Matthew Belloni’s What I’m Hearing… newsletter, this fan backlash may hurt Ted Lasso’s chances at the upcoming Emmy Awards in September. While “Lasso is still the front-runner, according to the prognosticators,” says Belloni, “There’s a growing backlash against the silly and meandering second season of Lasso.” Belloni claims an Emmy voter privately messaged him, saying they are a massive fan of the show, but season 2’s drop in quality is “nudging” him towards not voting for it.

Belloni’s example is purely anecdotal, as the opinion of this one Emmy voter may not represent the Television Academy at large. The newsletter mentions a past example of how Eddie Murphy’s Oscar campaign for 2006’s Dreamgirls was stifled by the release of Norbit in 2007, a comedy lambasted by critics, so it’s not entirely out of the question the same thing could happen to Ted Lasso. However, critics who have seen upcoming episodes say the shows get better, so it seems storylines like Ted’s panic attacks returning and Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) being revealed as Rebecca’s mystery match may steer the show back on its proper course.

While fans have been vocal on social media regarding their disapproval of season 2, it remains to be seen what the Emmy’s voting base thinks as a whole. Season 8 of Game of Thrones famously garnered a vitriolic response from its fanbase. Still, the final season ended up only adding to the show’s massive Emmy total, including a win for Outstanding Drama Series. Case in point, the two’s reactions are not always harmonious. Only time will tell how Ted Lasso fares at the Emmy Awards next month.
