Teen Wolf’s Derek Hale is a very “love him or hate him” sort of character. He has gone back and forth between being a hero, a minor antagonist, and an anti-hero, which makes him a very complex and divisive character amongst audiences. Due to his divisiveness as a character, this has led viewers to develop some unpopular opinions on him, which are shared on Reddit.

Some opinions have a point to them, like how Derek isn’t the best fighter, but they may still be considered unpopular to the fandom at large. These opinions may be about his relationships, writing, his character journey, or just his personality. Either way, each opinion deserves to be discussed, no matter how unpopular it may be.

Derek Isn’t Held To A High Moral Standard

In Teen Wolf, Derek Hale is an anti-hero. As a result, he often does some less than morally-correct things. While that’s fine to watch, some fans believe that he is often given a pass for his actions, whereas other characters have to face greater consequences for lesser evils. Reddit user BCastle18 says, “For some reason, Derek is always given a pass for [his bad behavior] while other characters’ bad moments are amplified.”

Granted, he does treat the people around him quite poorly. However, considering that his entire family was murdered and he is later stripped of his Alpha powers to save the people around him, he seems to have paid for his bad behavior.

Derek Could Have Been A Full Blown Villain

While Derek can be considered a minor villain in earlier seasons, he never goes full bad guy. But some Redditors, such as tracyerickson, think that that should have happened: “Derek Hale has the perfect villain’s backstory.”

The idea of Derek as a villain is interesting. Add in the fact that his entire family was burned alive, he has the motive for evil. But many feel that he is better suited to being a hero. Even tracyerickson also states that “This is what a hero looks like. Literally forged in fire.” Some viewers even think that Derek should have been Teen Wolf’s main protagonist, which is also an interesting idea.

The Hale Pack Was Underutilized

According to Reddit user ArtemisJTRH, Derek’s pack of Erica, Boyd, and Issac weren’t featured enough: “I feel a lot of sorrow over how underutilized and poorly used the Hale pack was written in the show as they were only around for one season. The actors were all fantastic and did as much as they could with the material given.”

It’s true, the Hale Pack was played very well by the actors and had a lot of potential on the whole. It’s a shame how they were only fully together in season 2. Though it’s easy to see that in a show with so many characters, some are going to get side-lined.

Derek Shouldn’t Have Given Up His Alpha Powers

When Derek gave up his Alpha powers to save his little sister Cora, some fans were very disappointed. According to Redditor SickAndSinful, “wasting Derek’s Alpha-ness on healing Cora was a really bad idea in my opinion, but I guess the writers figured there couldn’t be two Alpha main characters, each having their own pack.”

SickAndSinful is probably correct in their reasoning for why the writers made this decision, and this choice also helps give Derek character growth, as he now has to learn to survive without such power. Alpha or not, Derek is still able to fight off a pack of Alphas in a scene that had great special effects.

Derek Should Have Been A True Alpha

Scott becoming a True Alpha was a big moment in the show. But some Reddit fans disagree with this decision, such as HottskullxD, who argues that “Derek should have been the True Alpha.”

This does seem to be a very unpopular opinion, with Reddit user BCastle18 sarcastically retorting, “Because going around biting teenagers and not telling them the possible consequences of being a werewolf is such a great Alpha.” Many things about Derek have aged poorly, so it makes sense that he wouldn’t be considered a pure of heart True Alpha. Plus, he killed Peter to get his Alpha powers, which is exactly the opposite of how True Alphas are made.

He Was Too Brooding At First

While Derek’s angsty demeanor was what endeared so many fans to him on Teen Wolf, for many it made them dislike him. For Reddit user TheAmazingWebSlinger it was kind of ridiculous. “When they first introduced him, I was like “Who tf is this giant upset toddler in an oversized leather jacket?””

Other Redditors in the thread claimed that they also did not like Derek when he first appeared. He also has a reason to be as angsty as he is, due to losing his entire family. Plus, it’s a great foil to Scott’s eternal optimism and friendly demeanor. When Scott first became a werewolf, Derek’s behaviour added a lot of suspense, which drove most of the first season.

Derek Never Really Developed As A Character

Some fans on Reddit claim that Derek didn’t change or grow as Teen Wolf went along. According to Foreverred97, “While his character was cooler for the most part, his leadership was awful […] I still would’ve kept him brooding and secretive but he should have learned to open up to his betas and Scott over time.”

To contradict that, Derek does manage to fully defeat his main nemesis, Kate. During the fight, he gives one of Derek’s best quotes about how he has evolved past their relationship. It is also made clear that the reason he wants Scott in his pack is that he knows he needs people, having grown past his misanthropic tendencies.

He Wasn’t As Tough As Everyone Made Him Out To Be

While Derek is often considered to be very tough and a great fighter in the show, some fans were able to call out how this wasn’t exactly true. Reddit user ragingearlobe argues that “Derek lost the majority of the fights that he got into and even after all those losses the fandom still backed him and was like “Yeah he’s gonna crush it” and HE NEVER CRUSHED IT.”

They aren’t completely wrong as Derek did get captured or injured quite often. Though to Derek’s credit, he looks tough with that six-pack, which actor Tyler Hoechlin has talked about as a Teen Wolf behind the scenes fact.

Derek Shouldn’t Have Returned After Season 4

Derek’s character arc had pretty much been completed by the end of season 4, so he left and didn’t come back until much later in the show. But according to some fans, he should have stayed gone. For example, Redditor ragingearlobe says, “I just don’t see how Derek could come back and fit in at this point without looking so out of place and obvious.”

Derek had run his course by season 4. Since later seasons brought every past character back, however, it wouldn’t make sense not to include Derek, who had been a major main character from the beginning of the series.

Sterek Was Overrated

Teen Wolf had many popular ships throughout its seasons, and one of the most popular was Sterek, the relationship between Derek and Stiles. Many fans loved to watch their interactions and hoped that they would grow to connect on a deeper level.

But for Redditor BCastle18, “I saw nothing there with Sterek romantically, I don’t see the hype, if people actually cared about seeing Stiles with a guy, Danny and Scott were better options. I might even go as far as to say I hate the idea of Sterek and I didn’t even get a vibe that Derek was into guys. It would have been fan service if they somehow came together at the end.”
