Scott McCall is the epitome of the reluctant hero. While tromping through the woods with his best friend Stiles, a werewolf bites Scott. Scott has nothing special about him. He becomes the unassuming and ultimately unwilling participant of a feral Alpha’s pack, and eventually develops the McCall pack. There is really no reason for him to be the protagonist except he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

While Scott eventually comes into his own, characters from Teen Wolf readily admit that his transformation is pure happenstance. Greatness is thrust upon Scott whether he wants it or not. On the other hand, Derek Hale had always been accustomed to the supernatural. Derek has the drive to solve the mysteries of Beacon Hills because it directly correlated with his sister’s death. At times, it seems that there are many reasons Derek would be a better main character than Scott.

10 Was Born A Werewolf

Scott struggles with his werewolf destiny. He had no choice when Peter Hale attacked him in the woods before the first day of school. Scott eventually learns how to adjust, but some things cannot be taught.

Derek is resigned to his fate. While Scott searches for the cure to lycanthropy, Derek knows his destiny. For someone who is born that way, Derek does not have any choice. This gives him certain advantages. He is more practiced. He is smarter and often more capable than Scott simply because he was born into a werewolf family. Some conflicts would be resolved easier with Derek at the helm.

Derek’s entire family was burned in a tragedy. After his sister Laura becomes Alpha, she is killed for her position. The more people Derek loves, the more that are taken away. Even when he dares love a mortal, she turns into a killer who was responsible for decimating his loved ones. Derek has a call to action because of everything that he has lost. He has the drive to defeat the villains of Beacon Hills.

Scott may turn into a monster on the full moon, but he never had a choice in the matter. Scott is a blank canvas. He has not done anything that cannot be taken back. It is easy for him to make the correct decisions. But even though Derek is capable and strong, he makes mistakes.

He blames himself for his family’s death because he was in a terrible relationship with Kate when she burned his house down. While he does not enjoy the company of teenagers, he helps them because he feels guilty. The hero’s journey always follows those in need of redemption.

Loyalty is important to Derek. Once Peter shows his true colors and reveals he killed Laura on purpose, Derek goes on to make his own pack. Each new werewolf Derek picks has something inside of them that needs healing. They remind Derek of himself. Though this is a misplaced idea, Derek has good intentions.

Even though he is not correct, he cannot show uncertainty. He believes in doing things for the greater good, even if they’re not popular.

1 He Cares About Everyone
