8 Malia Is An Animal Learning To Be A Human

If Malia were the protagonist of the series, Teen Coyote would be a more fitting title. She spends eight years trapped in the body of an animal and superfans know that Malia is a natural werecoyote in Teen Wolf.

Unlike Scott, she’s born part-animal and inherits her shape-shifting abilities from the Desert Wolf. Malia is an animal learning how to be a human, which deviates from the norm. There are fewer stories told from this perspective and Malia’s tale is full of shocking twists and turns.

7 Malia Has A Unique Personality

There’s nothing boring about characters who do the right thing, and Scott’s strong sense of right and wrong actually makes him stand out from other protagonists on television. Very few are as selfless or open-hearted as he is, and Scott is a natural-born leader.

However, Malia is just as unique as Scott, if not more. The way she perceives the world is particularly amusing, and despite being savage, she has a good heart. Malia is easy to root for, and her unpredictability adds an extra level of suspense to the show.

6 Malia’s Relationships Require Long-Term Development

Scott and Stiles are best friends long before the events of the pilot, and while they do have remarkable relationship development with everyone, it comes naturally. The characters recognize how meaningful connections are formed, which is an instinct Malia lacks.

Malia doesn’t view her classmates as popular and unpopular—she views them as prey. She has much further to go than Scott does, and needs to see people as more than food before she can even begin to grasp the concept of cliques and social hierarchy.

4 Malia Accidentally Slaughtered Her Family

Out of all the characters in Teen Wolf, Malia has the most tragic backstory by a landslide. Not only does she lose her mother and sister while she’s just a child, but she mauls them to death after losing control during her first transition.

The guilt is what prevents Malia from shifting back and she remains trapped in her coyote form until Scott and his pack rescue her. The emotional repercussions of her actions add a depth to Malia’s character that many storylines can originate from.

3 Malia Struggles With Her Identity

Malia does figure out where she comes from, but it doesn’t make her feel the way she’d hoped. As the daughter of Peter Hale and the Desert Wolf, she fears that she has inherited their darkness. Malia struggles to differentiate herself from her bloodline and hold onto her sense of self.

It’s a heavy plot, but it’s also one that certain viewers can relate to. Writing “M.T.” as her initials in the school library remains Malia’s most iconic character moment in Teen Wolf. She finally accepts that who she is remains to be her choice, and Malia chooses to be a Tate.

2 Malia Has More Romantic Potential

Many viewers consider Scott and Malia to be one of the worst couples in Teen Wolf, but the timeline puts them at a disadvantage. Malia has chemistry with almost all of the characters, and there’s even a moment when she and Theo appear to be a possibility.

None of Malia’s romances receive proper care, and her relationship with Stiles is a result of their hookup in Eichen House. Her animalistic approach to life is actually a perfect contrast to Scott’s empathetic mindset, but the two feel as if they’re being thrown together at the last minute. Malia has incredible relationship potential, and simply needs a role that dedicates enough time to fleshing each dynamic out.

1 Malia Has More Significant Growth

Malia has the most impressive development out of all the characters in the show, despite facing the most challenges. While Lydia is a fierce competitor, Malia undergoes a physical, emotional, mental, and lifestyle change.

When she’s first introduced in Teen Wolf Season 3, Malia is a murderous coyote who is hyper-focused on survival. She has no sense of loyalty and cares about self-preservation more than anything else. By the time the series comes to an end, Malia has turned into a compassionate human being who risks her life for her friends.
