Tesla owners were reportedly left unable to drive their cars for hours after the company’s app server went down on Friday night. Many owners use the Tesla mobile app as a key to lock and unlock their cars. Drivers can also use a more traditional method of unlocking their vehicle using a keycard, but many users rely solely on the app as one of the perks of using a ‘smart’ electric car.

As for the server outage, it caps off a pretty ordinary week for Tesla, with multiple recent reports suggesting that the company’s full self-driving (FSD) technology is still a work in progress. A Tesla Model Y driver filed a complaint earlier this month, claiming that their car crashed into another vehicle while in FSD mode. A CNN report following the accident also seemingly bore out those claims, showing a self-driving Tesla almost crashing without human intervention.

As for the server outage on Friday night, people right across the world were seemingly affected by it. While connectivity issues were initially only reported from North America, owners in South Korea and elsewhere also soon started reporting problems. Interestingly, a report from Electrek claims that drivers who did not disconnect from the app could still unlock and drive their cars using a Bluetooth connection. The issue has since been mitigated, and Tesla owners are once again able to use the app as usual.

Tesla Remains Tight-lipped About The Outage

The outage comes just a day after Tesla pushed out a new update to its mobile app, adding a bunch of new features, including new customization options, cabin overheating protection, improved widgets and more. The most significant new feature in the latest update is the ability to customize quick controls on the homepage for easy access to options like ‘Flash,’ ‘Defrost,’ ‘Honk’ and more. It’s not immediately clear as to whether there’s a link between the update and the outage.

Tesla is yet to release an official statement on the issue, nor has Elon Musk, known for being remarkably outspoken, posted anything on the subject on Twitter. Musk’s only tweet related to this issue was a reply saying “Checking …” to a Tesla owner from South Korea, who reported experiencing a “500 server error” when trying to connect the Model 3 to the Tesla iOS app. Now that the app has seemingly regained its full functionality, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the company to clarify what exactly happened on Friday night.
