The next Tetris 99 event is bringing back an old theme, as the Pokemon Sword & Shield stage is returning to promote the upcoming Crown Tundra DLC.

Tetris 99 is the best reason to pay for Nintendo Switch Online, as it offers endless hours of competitive battle royale fun. The game hosts regular online events, where players can win new themes and background songs from first-party Nintendo franchises. Previous Tetris 99 events have included Luigi’s Mansion 3, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Nintendo of Europe’s Twitter page has revealed that the next Tetris 99 event will be bringing back the Pokemon Sword & Shield theme from 2019. This is to promote the upcoming release of the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokemon Sword & Shield, which is due to be released on October 22. The new event in Tetris 99 will run from October 16 to October 20.

The previous Tetris 99 events have involved scoring 100 points in matches against other players. The higher the player ranks in a match, the more points they will earn. Scoring first place will give you 100 points in one go, but even bad players can win the new theme by competing repeatedly and gathering the points gradually over many games. This new event is a little more lenient, as players only need to earn 50 points in order to score the Pokemon Sword & Shield theme. The official page for the event on Nintendo UK has noted that players can still compete in the event if they have earned the theme in the past. If they win the theme, then they will receive a repeat of the notification they received the first time.

It’s a shame that the event doesn’t feature a new theme based on the Crown Tundra. The previous Sword & Shield theme showed the 99 players in windows that featured Pokemon from the game. The developer could have done this with the returning Pokemon in the Crown Tundra DLC, especially as it’s adding new Legendary Pokemon to the game. With that being said, the Switch has had a massive influx of new players since the release of Pokemon Sword & Shield, so this will give them a fresh chance to win the theme.
