To execute Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy successfully, the story is set in the midst of the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. As a result, there is a lot of history given to every world the player explores as Star-Lord and the Guardians in their journey to stop evil and save the galaxy.

Square Enix smartly used a plethora of Marvel references and Easter eggs across the campaign to help their cosmic universe feel like a living and breathing world. They range from cosmic affairs many fans might expect to references to the expansive Marvel Comics lore that could surprise first-time players.

Pip The Troll

While traversing Lamentis in search of a way to cure Drax of the Church’s hold on him, players might notice something (or rather someone) running through the caverns. At first, it looks like a child but it is given no proper reveal and the only way to get a clear look at it is through the game’s photo mode.

This creature is actually revealed to be a rather obscure Marvel character known as Pip The Troll. In the comics, he’s known for being a mischievous but loyal companion of Adam Warlock. Since this is the chapter in which the Guardians meet Adam Warlock, it makes sense to feature Pip.

Ruby Thursday

In one of the strangest Easter eggs, the Guardians come across a destroyed camp on Maklu IV and the only survivor is a woman named Ruby Thursday. What makes it so strange is the appearance of the character: she possessed a red dome-like head with tentacles meanwhile the rest of her body is mostly a normal humanoid.

Ruby Thursday is far from some iconic villain; she mainly battled the Defenders but she is shown as one of the smartest Marvel characters, at least on Earth. However, in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, Ruby is barely anything more than a cameo.

Movie Soundtrack Reference

The Marvel Cinematic Universe portrayal of Guardians Of The Galaxy left an impact, particularly with the use of retro songs. That carries over into the game version as well, so they do give a nod to James Gunn’s films by having Star-Lord reference one of the songs used in the films.

Understandably, Rocket is worried about taking on a dragon that can demolish a camp with ease but Drax is confident in their abilities. Star-Lord says, “I’m with Drax: no mountain too high, no valley too low.” This is a reference to Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” which played towards the end of the first Guardians Of The Galaxy movie.

Possibly Connected To The Avengers

Despite Square Enix’s claims that Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy is completely disconnected, there are Easter eggs that suggest that the game is in the same universe as Marvel’s Avengers. The first comes in the opening chapter when the Guardians trek through a disabled Kree Sentry nearly identical to one of the boss fights in Marvel’s Avengers.

The second comes when the Guardians are transported across the galaxy via the Continuum Cortex. One of the many portals features the sounds of the Avengers in battle. Later on, when the Guardians are debating what to do to stop the Church, Gamora suggests they contact Earth’s heroes. Star-Lord calls them “the guys in the pajamas” followed by Drax stating, “Mighty pajamas.” This is an oblique reference to the Avenger’s nickname “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”

Which Spider-Man?

In the same sequence going through the Continuum Cortex, after the Avengers nod, there is another portal in which a voice clearly says, “Hey look, it’s Spider-Man!” Now since Rocket states that the portals can lead to any time, place, and even universe: this could mean a few things.

The first is that this could allow all the Marvel games to connect via a Multiverse. The portal could be a gateway to the Insomniac world in which Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales take place. The other possibility is that it is the Avengers universe again since Spider-Man is a DLC character for that game. Of course, it could simply be a different universe altogether that can reference past Spider-Man video games.

Wendigo

The natives of Maklu IV are a tribe of beasts known as the Wendigo. They resemble the abominable snowman and are some of the hardest enemies to fight in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. Some Marvel fans will recognize the Wendigo as one of the Hulk’s most famous enemies.

In the comics, the creature known as Wendigo was framing Hulk for the deaths of innocents. This led to the introduction of Wolverine and the battle between him and the Hulk. In this game, Wendigo was given a completely different origin but it is still a nice reference.

Klyntar References

The famous anti-hero Venom does not get a namedrop but his homeworld does by one of many characters in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy: Lady Hellbender. When trapped by Lady Hellbender, she attempts to kill the Guardians by using Klyntarian gas.

For those unaware, Klyntar is the canon homeworld of all symbiote and the true name for the alien symbiote are Klyntarians. Later on, it is speculated as to what cut off the head of a celestial thus creating Knowhere. This could be a reference to Knull, the god of the symbiotes who forged the first symbiote into a sword that killed a celestial by decapitation.

Dazzler Poster

In Star-Lord’s room on the Milano, he has several bits of Earth memorabilia. One of them is a poster of an X-Men character: Dazzler. Dazzler aka Alison Blaire is part-superhero and part-celebrity. Not only was she part of one of the best X-Men team rosters ever, but she starred in the graphic novel Dazzler: The Movie and has a singing career.

Star-Lord likely has the poster because of his love for music. This poster does raise a question: does this Star-Lord come from an Earth where mutants exist, or is Dazzler simply a musical/film artist in this version?

The Collector’s Emporium

The 10 Best Marvel Easter Eggs In The Guardians Of The Galaxy Game

On Knowhere, the Collector has an emporium to explore, and much like in the films and comics, it’s filled with many Marvel goodies that will have fans lost for hours. Rather than entries for every item inside, it’s better to just list the entire emporium as a giant Easter egg.

The emporium contains such treasures as Throg, the Frog Of Thunder, the Cosmic Cube, Richard Rider’s Nova helmet, the Mandarin’s signature Ten Rings that were featured in Shangi-Chi, and even the Superhuman Registration Act from the Civil War event. Not only is this great for Marvel fans but helps the universe in the game feel more alive and filled with history.

Stan Lee’s Glasses

The one item from the Collector’s emporium that deserves its own entry is the Cosmic Glasses and most fans will recognize them as the famous sunglasses worn by legendary Marvel character creator: Stan Lee. Between this and the statue in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it is touching to see game developers tributing the man.

For decades, Stan Lee worked with so many other writers and artists to bring the Marvel universe to readers and since then, Marvel has become a multi-generational franchise. Many generations adored seeing Stan Lee cameo in projects, and even after his tragic passing, he’s still touching the hearts of fans in spirit.
