10 Bojack Horseman – “That Went Well”

In what is easily one of the grimmest animated shows to date, season 3 certainly brought the already dark Bojack to a whole new level, ultimately setting the tone for future seasons to come. In this season finale, Bojack has spiraled, in a deeper depression than ever before, and for good reason.

Ultimately blaming himself for the death of Sarah Lynn, Bojack reflects on himself and considers himself poisonous. His former co-star and childhood celebrity had overdosed, and Bojack shows perhaps the most regret and remorse he ever has, while simultaneously sinking into great despair. Through the suffering, Bojack is able to connect with his friend Dianne, and accept a job working on a show, essentially changing the pace of the entire show.

9 Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – “Kimmy Makes Waffles!”

Season 1 of this highly creative show didn’t start off with the same unique flair it became known for, but watching it progress to this debut finale was a well worthwhile payoff. Ending with more courtroom action, which includes some of the shows funniest moments, Kimmy finally goes one on one with her nemesis, the Reverend, only to leave us with a nail-biting cliff hanger.

Jon Hamm is as funny as ever, showcasing some fantastic karate skills, and maybe not-so-smooth talk, saving himself yet again and keeping us all anxious for the next season. We get to a new relationship in the form of a road trip, and the show feels like it truly finds its original stride.

8 Love, Death & Robots – “The Secret War”

Anthologies can be a wonderful thing, and there may not be a better current example than Love, Death & Robots. You might be wondering how a compilation could have a finale that’s just that good, but frankly, any episode of the debut season could have been the finale, and It would still be top tier.

Love, Death & Robots, is both a visual and mental roller coaster of a ride, a truly one of a kind experience. Each episode is animated differently, told with different emotions, and leaves you with a different taste in your mouth. You can never truly know what to expect as the show continues, but you can’t stop watching, and this debut season leaves us all wanting a whole lot more of this amazing show.

7 Devilman Crybaby – “Crybaby”

Based on the Devilman manga, Crybaby is as captivating as it is horrifying, a nightmarish hell brought to life with incredible eye-popping visuals. Showcasing some of Netflix’s best animation, Crybaby is also one of the best overall anime series in years, standing out from the current crowd of filler fueled shows in more than a few ways.

A literal story of hell on Earth, Devilman pushes the boundaries of just how disturbing an anime can be, without even requiring realism. With only one season to date, “Crybaby” left us all clamoring for more of this dark and twisted fantasy.

6 GLOW – “Every Potato Has a Receipt”

Pro Wrestling is a world full of twists and turns, unexpected drama, and never-ending cliff hangers. GLOW serves as an exaggerated, yet wholesome and comedic large scale wrestling story, and it lives up to those expectations. Season 1 may have given GLOW it’s first steps, but by the end of season 2, the show has formed a solid foothold with a firm and solid cast of characters, each making you crave the next step in their journey between the ropes.

Season 2 ends with quite a lot up in the air. New relationships, a new job offering for the ladies, and a change in tone, Season 2 sets the show up to be a bit more dramatic than comedic. If season 1 didn’t have you wishing for more, season 2 certainly will.

5 Big Mouth – “The Department of Puberty”

Big Mouth is a beautifully crass and honest show, a silly yet wholesome look at the minds of a group of children growing up and going through puberty. Season 2 struck a massive chord in terms of relatability, touching on many areas most shows wouldn’t even dare mess with, while also exploring and expanding upon each character’s unique personality.

Ending with a mix of vulnerability, victory, and loss, season 2 finishes out with a roller coaster of emotions for our favorite lude and yet realistic middle schoolers. There’s bound to be at least one character for everyone to feel a connection with, and there’s bound to be more than one sincere message that will leave you wanting more.

4 Mindhunter – “Episode 10”

Based on a true-crime book written by an actual retired FBI agent, Mindhunter is possibly the most introspective look into categorizing and analyzing serial killers to have ever been made. Set from 1977 to 1980, the show’s debut season revolves around the formation and origination of the first group of FBI agents to make criminal psychology something that the Bureau took seriously.

Based on real events, we see notorious serial killers sit down to get their brains picked, and just how we can use this information to possibly stop future events. With an incredible cast of actors and some amazing cinematography, Mindhunter will stay locked in your brain and leave you coming back for a second helping of this highly illuminating show.

3 Russian Doll – “Ariadne”

Russian Doll starts off with a somewhat classic premise. What if you lived the same day, over and over again? This question is surely one we’ve all pondered, but this Emmy nominated dark comedy shows us the true horror and actuality of this concept in action. Starring the incredibly charismatic Natasha Lyonne, paired with the equally captivating Charlie Barnett, Russian Doll gives you two vantage points in a never-ending fever dream, colliding and affecting each other in ways they, and you, couldn’t even imagine.

By the end of the show’s first (and so far) the only season, you would think the titular character’s problems are resolved, even if shrouded in mystery still. Alas, one final sequence of joy and symbolism will keep you scratching your head and checking your Netflix, anticipating the second season.

2 Living With Yourself – “Nice Knowing You”

The newest show on this list, Living with Yourself debuted only late this year, and what a solid first impression it has made. Starring Paul Rudd in what may be his most impressive role to date, Living is as metaphorically powerful as it is terrifying and unpredictable. By the time the shows first episode even ends, you’ll be thinking to yourself, “Where could this show possibly go from here?”

Direction, however, is something this show nails right on the head. Falling deeper and deeper into chaos, Living will make you more comfortable while simultaneously putting you on edge, teetering at the edge of your seat with each episode, curious as to how things could even progress next. It’ll surely be exciting to see how the shows second season pans out.

1 Stranger Things – “Chapter Nine: The Gate”

It would be quite illogical, even downright silly, to think Stranger Things wouldn’t be near the top of this list. Debuting in 2016, the show has gone on to become not only Netflix’s most popular originals but one of the most popular shows in the world, period.

And with good reason. A true mashup and call back to everything ’80s, Stranger Things takes every trope from the era’s wildest and most popular media, and melds them into an incredibly well written and thrilling nostalgia-fueled joy ride.
