Hideo Kojima is one of the most important figures in the video game industry. His name sits side by side with the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto and Hironobu Sakaguchi. Throughout his more than thirty years in the industry, the auteur game designer has had a hand in over fifteen projects, most of which were critical darlings, if not commercially successful.

The following list will present the ten best games he worked on, from the world renowned hits to more obscure hidden gems. While most people only know Metal Gear, it’s definitely worth checking out some of the other titles he made outside of the legendary franchise.

10 Metal Gear 2

1987’s Metal Gear established the genre, but its official sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, improved upon the debut in every conceivable way. The game play was tighter, the art was more defined, and the story line dipped its toe into themes the series would later explore.

The first one is tough to go back to, but Solid Snake stands as a classic. Fans of the series playing it for the first time will find a bevy of similarities between it and Metal Gear Solid, as if the 1998 title was a 3D remake.

9 Policenauts

Detractors decrying the Metal Gear series as more movie than game obviously never played some of his other titles. Policenauts is a point and click adventure title resembling more of a visual novel than a game. Most of the adventure involves examining a scene until the right object is investigated, but the occasional first-person rail shooting segments pick up the pace. The futuristic detective story was hailed upon release for its aesthetic and gripping plot involving a organ trafficking conspiracy. Unfortunately, no official English translation exists,

8 Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

The 2010 PSP game pushed the handheld to its limits with its presentation and the amount of content stored on the tiny UMD. It also saw a big change for the series, as it divided the game into levels, packing in bonus missions on the side.

The desire to get better equipment dramatically increased replay value, and the unique narrative structure kept players guessing even after the credits rolled. While all of this earns it a spot on the list, the impressive way it translated the series’ complex controls to the PSP was enough to get it here on its own.

7 Snatcher

The basic idea for Snatcher heavily resembled the cult film Blade Runner, but Kojima’s game strays far from its inspiration as the story unfolds. The titular Snatchers are deadly androids indistinguishable from humans. Like most games by the designer, the story involves the Cold War and the Soviet Union. The first edition released in 1988, and while it wasn’t a huge success – especially in North America – those who played it acknowledged how ahead of the curb its story was for the medium.

6 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

This 2015 title took Peace Walker’s design and brought it to consoles. While in the field, players recruited soldiers and took supplies to further develop their base and manufacture better items and weapons. On top of that, it had an incredibly dark story, even by Metal Gear standards.

The one thing holding it back and preventing it from landing any higher is the drama surrounding it which ultimately saw the game releasing in an unfinished state. As unfortunate as this is, at least Kojima marched on with his head held high and is gearing up to release Death Stranding this November.

5 Zone Of The Enders: The 2nd Runner

The first Zone of the Enders is also a fantastic game, but the smoother game play and mission variety of its sequel help it take the cake. In addition, the style and presentation helped it stand out among its contemporaries. Yoji Shinkawa did much of the art for the project, and it’s easy to see visual similarities between it and the Metal Gear series. While Kojima served as a producer and not a director, one definitely feels his mark on the game stronger than other titles on which he has a producer credit.

4 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Every Metal Gear game makes drastic changes to the formula, but no one could have foreseen the series going from slightly futuristic sterile military environments to a Russian jungle in 1964. Many were taken aback by this change, but the move paid off in spades as the prequel proved a worthy successor to Metal Gear Solid 2. Environments were more open, leading to newer game play possibilities, and the story largely ignored the future entries (though they would later all be connected by Metal Gear Solid 4). In addition, a stamina bar and the possibility of injuries made the game more about surviving than simply sneaking around.

3 P.T.

P.T. is a demo representing what could have existed if the canceled Silent Hills actually came out, but it’s not even available to download anymore. The collaboration between Kojima and Guillermo del Toro was shaping up to be a truly unsettling horror experience. Those who explored the demo can relay just how disturbing the short demo was. While some may bemoan its placing on the list considering it was a short teaser, one cannot deny the impact it had on gaming and its innovative method of announcing a project.

2 Metal Gear Solid

The series’ first 3D outing made it a force to be reckoned with. The fully voice acted cutscenes were a rarity at the time, and the story established characters and laid the foundation for the rest of the series.

It lacks innovations like first-person aiming, rolling, and peaking around corners, but that doesn’t hold it back from being being just as enjoyable today as it was twenty years ago. Several moments went down in history as iconic scenes in gaming, not the least of which was Psycho Mantis reading the PS1’s memory card.

1 Metal Gear Solid 2

Some works of art take advantage of current events to give the story deeper meaning. Metal Gear Solid 2 is very much a product of the new millennium, as it deals with the rise of the internet and humanity’s newfound ability to transfer massive amounts of information and what that means for individuals. Of course, a great story would be nothing without good game play, and MGS2 fully delivers in this respect. It retains the core game play, but adds several maneuvers that completely change the cat and mouse game between the player and their adversaries. In addition, the game offered an unprecedented level of environmental interaction such as hiding enemies in lockers, shooting their radios so they cannot call for backup, and even shooting a bucket of ice and watching the cubes slowly melt.
