For a studio mainly concerned with the warm and fuzzy family image, Disney certainly has a lot of dysfunctional or unconventional family units, don’t they? Normally, this is mostly for comedic effect or to make the characters more relatable to the audience. After all, who doesn’t have a set of quirky family members in their own circle?

Whether for good or bad, there are plenty of families in the Disney universe that seem to have more than their fair share of quirks. And with the holidays well on their way, what better time to talk about the relatives we love, tolerate, or simply can’t stand?

10 The Riveras (Coco)

The Rivera’s might be a little tame compared to most of the other contenders on the list, but something has to be said for a family that outlaws music.

This is mainly due to the strict nature of his Abuelita and the family’s ties to a certain memorable musician, but it still feels a bit excessive. And that’s not even mentioning the skeletal members of Rivera families past that await Miguel in the Land of the Dead.

9 The Seven Dwarfs (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)

Considering the dwarves all live together in the same cottage, it might be correct in assuming that they are all brothers or otherwise related in some fashion. With that in mind, it might not be the best idea in the world to mix all those different personalities under the same roof.

Audiences might not know what their lives were like before Snow White entered the picture, but judging from the condition of their house, one might mistake it for a woodland frat party.

8 Donald and His Nephews (Various)

Who gets stuck with all the bad luck? No one but Donald Duck. That sentiment is practically carved in stone for Disney fans, and most of Donald’s grief does come from the antics of his nephews.

DuckTales episodes aside, Huey, Dewey, and Louie have always been a trio of troublemakers. And when Donald gets involved with their antics, a tidal wave of slapstick is never too far away, usually at Donald’s expense.

7 The Sanderson Sisters (Hocus Pocus)

Dysfunctional they may be, but there’s no denying that this trio of wicked witches use their collected comedic talents to the film’s advantage. Winifred, Mary, and Sarah are some of Disney’s best live-action villains and some of the funniest to boot.

Their personalities are all outrageous and outlandish, but the best bits are when the gals fight amongst themselves. Still, it might not be the best idea to have them for a family get-together, unless there’s a children’s table.

6 Lock, Shock, and Barrel (The Nightmare Before Christmas)

Oogie’s Boys get a sort of honorable mention on the list mainly due to their memorability. They might not have the longest appearance, but watching them plot and even fight amongst themselves is more than enough to earn a spot.

Not only are they Halloween Town’s finest trick-or-treaters, but they’re in league with that no-account Oogie Boogie as well, which would probably account for their upbringing. Is it any wonder they’re able to kidnap the Sandy Claws and undoubtedly scar the Easter Bunny for life?

5 Jumba’s Experiments (Lilo and Stitch)

Everyone knows Stitch is Experiment 626, but how quickly they forget that there are still 625 more unleashed on the islands of Hawaii.

Though they might be mere monster-of-the-week characters in a spinoff series, a family consisting of hundreds of destructive aliens has to account for some form of dysfunctionality, right? Not to mention there’s a literal mad scientist in Stitch’s big ohana as well. If it’s a numbers game, these guys definitely take the cake.

4 Pete’s Family (Goof Troop)

With a daughter literally named Pistol, there’s definitely something going on with Goofy’s next-door neighbors. During Goof Troop’s run, a great portion of the show’s comedy was provided by Pete and his clan, even giving Goofy some serious competition.

But for a golden example of some top-tier dysfunction, pay attention to how Pete and PJ interact in A Goofy Movie, there’s a good chance there might be something darker going on as well…

3 Ma Beagle and The Beagle Boys (Ducktales)

The Beagles were better expanded in the 2019 reboot, but all variations of Ma and the Beagle Boys definitely deserve a mention. Crime families always have some level of dysfunction, either for comedy or for exploitation, and the frequent adversaries of Scrooge McDuck are no different.

Although they’ve come a long way since their comic book origins, the Beagle family remains a house divided, often leading to their downfall.

2 The Tremaines (Cinderella)

Lady Tremaine and her daughters have to get some serious top-tier placement for one main factor, it’s their cruelty that acts as a catalyst for the entire narrative.

Anastasia and Drizella can barely go five minutes without bickering, and their mother has one of the most devious mean-streaks in the studio’s golden age. It’s a wonder poor Cinderella was able to keep that cheery demeanor. Anyone would need a fairy godmother after a lifetime than this terrible trio.

1 The Guardians of the Galaxy (The Guardians of the Galaxy)

This ragtag group of outcasts might not be related by blood, but they definitely fit the dysfunctional family mold. That was practically the message of Guardians Vol. 2.

There are a lot of conflicting elements at work within the Guardians, to say the least. A space pirate stuck in the ’70s, a daughter of Thanos, a muscle-bound destroyer who doesn’t get metaphors, a gentle tree giant, and a mutant raccoon doesn’t exactly sound like the most traditional family unit, but they’re perfect for the MCU.
