The Pokémon franchise was created by Satoshi Takira in 1995 and immediately took the world by storm with its fun lore and colorful creatures. One of the biggest Pokémon successes was the trading card game, which was published in 1996, and seemed to hook every child on the planet for a time. Pokémon was definitely ahead of the game when it came to forcing parents to consistently pay money for non-essential items, and while many imitators try to follow the formula, none have managed to reach the same level of hype.

Even from the beginning, particularly powerful and/or rare cards were not uncommon, and as the franchise grew and hundreds of new creatures were added to the Pokedex, each batch came with something more rare and powerful than ever before. Here are the top 10 most formidable Pokémon cards.

10 Mega Tyranitar

Tyranitar is a Rock/Dark-type and pseudo-legendary Pokémon resembling a large bipedal dinosaur. It is the final form of Larvitar, and evolves from Pupitar at level 55. Mega Tyranitar has one active move, Destroyer King, which deals 110 base damage and 60 more for every damage counter on the opponent’s active Pokémon.

The card also follows the mega evolution rule, like many cards on this list, where each trainer is permitted to mega evolve one of their Pokémon.

9 Mega Rayquaza

Rayquaza is a Dragon/Flying-type Legendary Pokémon. It is not created through evolution but is capable of mega evolution. Mega Rayquaza’s one active move, Dragon Ascent, is expensive but devastating, causing 300 damage but costing 5 energy cards to wield, losing a further 2 after it is carried out.

Rayquaza is also the face of the game Pokémon Emerald and was introduced in Generation III.

8 Shiny Mew

Mew was always a particularly powerful and significant Pokémon along with Mewtwo, the other half of “The Mew Duo.” The Psychic-type Mythical Pokémon looks adorable but is so immensely powerful, its mere existence can be seen as dangerous, like Phoenix or the kid whose presence temporarily “cures” mutant traits in X-Men.

As well as being able to mimic the moves of attacking Pokémon, Mew has a unique move called Rainbow Wave, which deals 20 damage to every enemy Pokémon of the same type as your chosen energy card, even if they are benched.

7 Mega Blastoise

When one of your Pokémon mega evolves, your turn ends, but it is usually a sacrifice worth making. One of the very first Water-types Blastoise is the final form of Squirtle and evolves from Warturtle. He was the face of the game Pokémon Blue and can achieve Gigantamax form as well as Mega.

As Mega Blastoise, his Hyrdo Bombard attack deals 120 damage plus an additional 30 damage each to 2 of your opponent’s benched Pokémon and only costs 3 water energy cards.

6 Armaldo

Armaldo is a Rock/Bug-type Fossil Pokémon that evolves from Anorith. It has 160 HP and multiple unique attacks.

These attacks include the passive move Dual Armor which lets Armaldo switch to Leaf or Fighting-type, Spiral Drain which deals 40 damage and knocks off 2 of your damage counters, and Vortex Chop, which does 70 damage or 100 if your opponent has resistance.

5 Mega Gengar

Gengar is a scary Ghost/Poison Pokémon. It evolves from Haunter and is the final evolved form of Gastly. It has both a Mega and Gigantamax form.

As Mega Gengar, it has an impressive 220 HP, and a no-strings move called Phantom Gate. This move lets you cherry-pick any of your opponent’s moves to use as your own, for a reasonable 3 energy cards.

4 Charizard (G) Level X

Charizard is another original Pokémon, but this time is the face of the games Pokémon Red and FireRed. He is a Flying/Fire-type Pokémon, and looks like a dragon. It evolves from Charmeleon and is the final form of Charmander. As well as a Gigantamax form, Charizard has 2 Mega forms, Level X and Level Y.

Level X Charizard has a passive move called Call For Power, which lets you move energy cards from your opponent’s Pokémon to Charizard before they attack you. Another move is Malevolent Fire, which deals 150 damage, 30 more than Charizard has HP. It costs 5 energy cards, and you risk losing them if you come up tails, but you only need to use it once to get the message across.

3 Rayquaza C Level X

Rayquaza makes yet another appearance on this list, but this time in name-taking Level X form. Level X Rayquaza has a handy move called Dragon Spirit, which lets you attach any energy card from the discard pile to Rayquaza when active and attacked.

This gives the card an edge, even though the still formidable 200 damage dealt by Final Blowup is 100 short of what Ray’s capable of in Mega form.

2 Mega Venusaur

The last of the originals on this list, Mega Venusaur manages to trump both Mega Blastoise and Mega Charizard. This Grass/Poison-type giant is the face of the games Pokémon Green and LeafGreen, and is the final form of Bulbasaur after Ivysaur, with both a Gigantamax and Mega form.

Mega Venusaur has 230 HP and one attack, Crisis Vine, which deals 120 damage as well as both paralyzing and poisoning your opponent.

1 Shadow Lugia

Lugia is a Flying/Psychic Legendary Pokémon and the face of the games Pokémon Silver and Pokémon SoulSilver, as well as the trio-master of the Legendary Birds: Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Shadow Lugia is one particular form of Lugia, which has been cruelly corrupted and manipulated by the Cipher organization. Shadow Lugia is known as the most powerful Shadow Pokémon.

Shadow Lugia has 300 HP and an attack called Shadow Storm that deals a glorious 1,000 damage if you can and want to spare four psychic energy cards, that is. It is almost a credit to the evil organization that created him.
