Electric-type Pokémon boast some of the weirdest and most interesting designs. Some of these are a lot less visually appealing than others.

With Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl both set to release soon, Pokémon fans will be eagerly awaiting the chance to see iconic Pokémon from the game reimagined for the Nintendo Switch. Not all of the Pokémon will be looked back on so fondly, however. There are well over 50 Electric-type Pokémon and, along with their many hits, there are some misses.

Whether plain-looking, bizarre, or downright unpleasant to look at, ugly Pokémon are the odd ones out. Through some questionable design choices, these Pokémon stand out from the rest in the Electric-type section of the Pokédex.

10 Magneton

Evolving from the already odd-looking Magnemite, Magneton is a dual-type Electric/Steel Pokémon with three spherical eyes, protruding screws, and horseshoe magnets. First introduced in Generation I, Magneton has been around since the beginning, and its design is still iconic to this day.

While undeniably a slightly disconcerting design, it is one that has caught on very well, becoming a mainstay of the games and the anime. Magnemite even appeared in Detective Pikachu a couple of years ago. There is an enduring appeal to the simplicity of the magnetic Pokémon.

9 Toxtricity

One of the Generation VIII electric-type Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, Toxtricity’s design suggests a team trying something different. Toxtricity is another dual-type, its yellow and purple color scheme representing the clash between electric and poison types.

Indeed, clash is a good summary of this design, meshing a humanoid body with odd lumps, spikes, and patterns, as well as a lizard-like face. Toxtricity is not the prettiest Pokémon, and its creepy, three-fingered hands don’t improve matters. Nevertheless, Toxtricity is just unconventional enough in style that some will be able to appreciate it for its weirdness.

8 Arctozolt

Another of the newer Pokémon, Arctozolt is one of the most bizarre Pokémon designs of the electric-types and even just of Pokémon as a whole. A dual-type Electric/Ice Pokémon, Arctozolt can be resurrected in Pokémon Sword and Shield only by combining a Fossilized Bird and a Fossilized Dino, and can’t be obtained any other way.

Once this process has been performed, the outcome is an absurd combination of features. Arctozolt looks rather unfortunate, with its long, bird-neck protruding from a snow cone with legs, and its face seemingly stuck permanently in a huge sneeze. Arctozolt easily earns its place among the ugliest of the electric-type Pokémon, but its sorry state and the cartoonishness of its appearance do give it a certain appeal.

7 Raikou

One of the three Legendary beasts, Raikou is a dominating presence and is said to have descended with lightning. Like the other Legendary beasts, Raikou’s design is extravagant, bringing in a variety of colors and adornments.

What sets Raikou apart from the other two Legendaries is that it goes just a little bit too far on the ridiculous part of the scale. With its saber teeth, star mustache, black headpiece, and an oddly fluffy-looking purple mane, Raikou is as over the top they come. Arguably, its appearance is as garish as befitting a Pokémon of such status, but a little subtlety could have gone a long way.

6 Xurkitree

Unlike most electric-type Pokémon, Xurkitree is quite hard to identify at first. This makes sense, however, as it is one of the Ultra beasts introduced in Generation VII, a group of Pokémon originating from another dimension known as “Ultra Space”.

Xurkitree is, if anything, one of the more normal of the Ultra Beasts in appearance, despite its amorphous, barely humanoid appearance that looks like an alien collection of tangled wires. Even describing Xurkitree as ugly is slightly odd, since it lacks anything even resembling a face, but its appearance is decidedly not conventionally aesthetically pleasing, or conventionally anything for that matter.

5 Charjabug

A dual-type Bug/Electric Pokémon, Charjabug definitely looks more bug-like, though it qualifies due to its secondary electric aspect. Its lightning-bolt-shaped mouth and the electricity it discharges from the tips of its jaws display this. Charjabug evolves from Grubbin and has a distinctive silhouette, looking like an unlikely cross between a caterpillar and a bus.

Despite its distinctively cuboid shape, it is the bug-like features that make Charjabug a contender for the ugliest electric-type Pokémon. Those stubby prongs and vertical mouth are offputting elements that overshadow the design. However, it is possible to look past those elements and see the cuteness in Charjabug’s compact appearance.

4 Regieleki

An electric-type legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII, Regieleki’s design is as bizarre and perplexing as its name. Regeleki again represents an attempt to do something different with Pokémon designs in the newer titles, especially with the Legendary Titans of which it is a member. For better or for worse, Regieleki is a prime example of this.

Arguably not even the ugliest of the Legendary Titans, Regieleki is nevertheless one of the most strange Pokémon ever made. It looks unnervingly alien with its six oddly arranged eyes and a body shape completely unlike anything else. The design emanates the unknown power and otherworldliness of the Legendary Titans. In that sense, it is a success, but there is nothing particularly aesthetically pleasing about it either.

3 Electivire

First appearing in the original games, Electivire is a Pokémon fans should be able to obtain again in the upcoming Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Electivire has a bulky humanoid body and resembles an angry, ape-like animal.

Evolving from Electabuzz as the final form of Elekid, Electivire loses some of their goofy charm with its long face, red eyes, and intense smile. Its stubby antenna and weird wire tendrils finish off an intimidating appearance but its goonish appearance will appeal to some, and many will look forward to Electivire’s appearance in the upcoming games.

2 Stunfisk

Another dual-type Pokémon with electric as its secondary type, Stunfisk nevertheless could hardly be left out of a discussion of the ugliest electric Pokémon. Resembling a fish that has been stepped on, Stunfisk’s biology is actually quite interesting as it developed the organs needed to generate electricity from the bacterial life in the mud flaps in which it lives.

Despite that, Stunfisk is undeniably horrible-looking. Even its color scheme of browns and beiges set it apart from electric-types as being uniquely dull and lifeless. It’s easy to feel sorry for the Stunfisk at least, and some may even find its sorry appearance endearing.

1 Eelektrik

Tynamo is not the most striking Pokémon. It has an unusual mouth but despite that, it’s not too remarkable. As a result, Pokémon Black and White players were in for a nasty surprise when it would eventually evolve into the irredeemably ugly Eelektrik.

Eelektrik’s design has many issues. It resembles an eel with a horrific leech-like mouth and visible teeth. It has a beige underbelly and odd beige fins on top and bottom that make it difficult to work out what way up this Eelektrik is even supposed to be. Even Eelektrik’s eyes are creepy. The eel Pokémon was first introduced in Generation V and hasn’t returned as an obtainable Pokémon since the generation after, and it is easy to understand why.
