The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

There should be no one in the world who dislikes the Pokémon franchise. As one of the most successful monster series out there, the lives of Ash Ketchum and stories of the games have always touched the hearts of children and adults alike. Just looking at the positive response that Pokémon Go! had or even the success of the game alone, you know that these little cuties aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Some of us grew up with them while others are just getting started. And what better thing to get into than something so wholesome?

The one thing that Pokémon has constantly been trying to improve and evolve with, however, is their toys. While games and television series might do relatively well, toys can sometimes be a very different story. For those of you growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s, you probably remember some of the stories that came with strange new toys that were trying to be something completely unique to their overall brand while also trying to fit in with trends.

When your franchise is based after such a unique game and show that shows battling monsters, who have a pretty unique fighting style and upkeep outside of battle, it can be a little tough to have merchandise that mirrors it. That being said, there has also been some really cool toys that really stood out! Here are 10 of the weirdest Pokémon toys we’ve ever seen and 10 of the very best out there!

20 Weird: Pokémon Battle Spinners

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

Battle Spinners are actually a very common toy. Whether you’re talking about the Beyblade brand or similar brands, there’s plenty of different toys that allow kids to spin a character around and throw them into battle. As cool as that sounds, it’s a little strange for the Pokémon brand. The toy doesn’t seem to make that much sense when it comes to how Pokémon are used in battle and it almost seems better to just get an actual Pokémon figure at this point. Besides the actual functions, it also seems like it’s fairly expensive to buy online; is it really worth it? You could just get the game!

19 Best: Throw ‘N’ Pop Poké Balls

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

The one issue with a lot of Poké Ball items is that they never really work right. Particularly when it comes to plushies, some of which are on this list, they sometimes come off as lumpy and a little strange looking. The plastic Poké Balls, on the other hand, are often some of the best item. Clip-on ones or normal ones that open and hold a plastic Pokémon are great, but this one is downright awesome. Everyone’s always wanted to do the classic throw and have a Pokémon pop out of it, and it looks like this is the toy to let you do it!

18 Weird: 90s Marill Foam Costume

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

The 90s had a lot to offer kids, especially when it came to Pokémon. The series was still relatively new, but its popularity was picking up speed. With all the cool games and merchandise that was coming out with the television series, so did absolute horrors.

This Marill costume for Halloween is a little strange looking, but that’s not the real reason it makes no sense.

Of course, kids would love to dress up as their favorite Pokémon for Halloween, that seems like a lot of fun, but Marill seems like an odd one to make a costume for. Why not have Pikachu or one of the starters that we would frequently see in both the games and show?

17 Best: Snorlax Bean Bag Chair

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

We’re going to consider this a toy because, at the end of the day, what you’re really getting is a real-life Snorlax. Sure, it doesn’t move or speak, but technically speaking the only thing Snorlax does anyways is yawn and eat; which is literally everything you can do while cuddling up with this awesome bean bag chair! We’ve seen a lot of Snorlax themed toys, figures, and plushes, but this is by far the one that represents its personality the best out of them all. Cuddle up, watch TV, or play one of the classic games while really showing off just how nerdy you are!

16 Weird: 20th Anniversary Pikachu Exclusive Plush

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

Anniversary merchandise is always a blast. Regardless of the brand, we love when our favorite series or games come out with special additions to collect no matter if it’s t-shirts or plushies. However, in the case of the 20th Anniversary Pikachu Exclusive, we might be a little more hesitant. We’ve seen Pikachu plushes change drastically over the years, particularly because the quality of the series was getting better. While his design certainly fits the newer version of everyone’s favorite Pokémon, the Pikachu print that this plush is made out of seems a little strange, if not tacky.

15 Best: Pikachu Bank

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

If you need to save up for a special something, consider getting some help from your favorite banker; Pikachu! There’s been an abundance of adorable piggy banks like this one going around. Most of the time, a cute little cat will come out to greet you and simultaneously take your money.

Now we might actually start saving our money… But only after we spend it on this!

We’re really digging this Pokémon version of the bank, because who wouldn’t give Pikachu all the change in their pocket? Piggy banks have always been a great way to help teach kids how to save money, but if you’re a nerdy adult trying to make ends meet, you should probably consider investing in this adorable face.

14 Weird: Pokémon Mini Skateboard

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

Everyone remembers the mini skateboards from their childhood; usually, kids would use their fingers to learn new tricks and keep their hands distracted. Essentially, these little toys were like early versions of the fidget spinners and cubes. Yet, we’re having a hard time understanding why we would ever want a Pokémon version of this.

The original fidget cube/spinner!

Certainly, the designs are cool and to collect Pokémon artwork would definitely make sense, but at that point, you should consider getting larger versions of these. Having a tiny skateboard doesn’t really make sense if you’re doing it for the design and there were definitely more entertaining toys around when this came out.

13 Best: Pokémon Clip ‘N’ Carry Poké Ball Belt

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

We’re all going to want to be kids again after seeing this; a trainer’s belt that holds your Poké Balls! There’s a few different versions of the belt to choose from, as some do come with different kinds of Poké Balls and Pokémon. If you’ve ever wondered what it felt like to be a trainer, or you just want to look really cool while playing Pokémon Go!, then this might be something to add to your Amazon list. The belt itself may look simple, but a lot of that is for functionality. It has a simple pattern that will let the kinds of Poké Balls you clip to it stand out. Not to mention the adorable Pokémon in them!

12 Weird: Pokémon Sliders

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

You may remember Pokémon Sliders if you grew up with the series. These were small versions of our favorite Pokémon out there, but this time they had “rolling action,” which already sounds pretty awful. Some kids certainly liked the games that came with these battling monsters, but for the most part, their function was solely to slide around on a surface and, hopefully, knock over an opponent.

You might consider collecting them if you’re a really big toy collector, especially if you’re into Pokémon, but this isn’t the most entertaining or creative toy they’ve come up with. When there’s a game that’s dedicated to these monsters fighting the way they’re supposed to, it seems a little redundant to make toys like this.

11 Best: Red Nendodroid

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

The Good Smile Nendoroids are a little pricier than your average figure, and Red is perhaps one of the most expensive, but we can assure you he’s totally worth it. If you’re unfamiliar with Nendoroids, they’re usually cute, small figures that are extremely well built and very details. For those who collect figurines, especially from popular franchises, these are usually a must-have item.

There are so many changeable parts, it’s a must have for your collection!

It stands to reason why a Pokémon Nendoroid would be worth so much! They come with custom pieces, including expressions, poses, and even interchangeable items that they can hold. We’d advise these be bought for older children, if not for yourself, considering the size.

10 Weird: Pokémon Bouncy Ball

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

Bouncy balls are sort of a staple in generic toys. They’re simple and everyone usually likes them, in soft way. They may not be the most entertaining, but if you have a spare quarter, you might get one out of a machine.

Why do the Pokémon look horrified to be trapped in there?

Why anyone would buy the Pokémon bouncy balls, on the other hand, is beyond us. There’s a small Pokémon inside the ball itself, so we get that the concept should revolve around how the monsters are usually kept in Poké Balls. But there’s nothing particularly special about this; outside of the toy, it’s your average, clear ball. Wouldn’t it be better to just have a Poké Ball design on a regular bouncy ball?

9 Best: Pikachu Charizard Plush

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

Because who wouldn’t want an adorable Pikachu dressed as a Charizard? The poster child of Pokémon wearing one of the most popular starters is due for success. There’s tons of Pikachu plush dolls out there, and they’re all very cute in their own right, but we love when they’re dressed up!

We just want to see Pikachu dressed as all the other Pokémon!

If you’re not a huge Charizard fan, that’s also okay because there are several other versions with Pikachu dressed as other popular Pokémon, even legendaries! If you really want something adorable to cuddle with at night or are looking for a cute gift, consider a nice, stylish Pikachu for the perfect nerd gift!

8 Weird: Pokémon Battle Coin Game

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

We’ve seen battling tabletop spinners and sliders, but nothing compares to battling coins. Yet again, we see that Pokémon had no restraint when it came to any kind of battling toy; even if it wasn’t all that good. We’d almost prefer a Pokémon coin collection compared to this. While the design on the back looked relatively okay, the packaging itself described “holographic” coins, which were not at all the case. Besides, when it came to the beautiful art that Pokémon did for the card game, the coins looked cheap in comparison. Amongst a variety of rules for what monster you could play, you’d have to spin them and see which person had the upper hand in battle moves. Overall, it was not their best toy out there.

7 Best: Legendary Figures

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

You simply cannot go wrong with a legendary figure. The figurines that come out of the Pokémon brand are always really nice quality and perfect for all ages. Whether you’re interested in simply collecting a few or you’re looking for a toy that a really young child can grab onto without breaking it, or even hurting themselves, the legendary ones are usually a safe bet.

Who doesn’t want a small army of legendary Pokémon?

Unlike some of the normal Pokémon, the legendary figures tend to be larger and more durable. This makes them both really sturdy and safe while also giving off that intimidating feel that everyone gets when battling against them in game.

6 Weird: Talking Ash Ketchum Figure

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

Talking action figures aren’t always that bad, but we’re not too big on the Ash Ketchum one. Figures from this time weren’t always the best; look at any super hero or regular toy from the late 90s and early 2000s and you’ll see just how far we’ve come. In particular, the details themselves have gotten better.

Please don’t malfunction!

But this figure is just a little strange looking compared to the Ash we saw on television. Not to mention the voice lines sort of sounded like the stuff of nightmares, so we’d hate to see what would happen if this thing malfunctioned and the discomfort our childhood, and adult, hearts would have to take.

5 Best: Interactive Pokédex

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

A Pokédex is really the only thing you should ever need if you’re really looking to become a Pokémon trainer. Well, that and some actual Pokémon of course! The interactive Pokédex is a really cool toy that shows, relatively, how the Pokédexes in both the game and television series would work.

This is perhaps the coolest thing we’ve ever seen when it comes to Pokédex replicas!

It’s a full-color display and the touch screen is extremely responsive. It also allows you to explore and catch Pokémon on it while learning all about them! Out of all the toys we’ve listed, this is definitely the best one considering how advanced and accurate it is to the actual show.

4 Weird: Pokémon Nanoblocks

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

The Nanoblocks didn’t have that bad of a series. In fact, some of the Pokémon that you could build did come out looking relatively cute. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that rule applied to all of the monsters. Some of the ones that you can build, like Snorlax, end up looking misshapen, especially in the face.

Some Pokémon were just not meant to be Nanoblock figures…

While we get that the Nanoblocks can only do so much for spherical monsters and that the look was supposed to be more pixilated, it certainly didn’t work out well for some of these Pokémon that they could have simply dropped from their roster.

3 Best: Pokédex Trainer Kit

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

If you’re truly looking for that Ash Ketchum look, we’d advise getting a Trainer Kit. The gloves, Pokédex, and even a little Pikachu? All you’d really be missing is the famous hat that Ash is always wearing! Put it together and you’ll be ready to catch ‘em all in no time. What we love about this toy is that it comes with everything a trainer really needs. Even in the show, while most of the kids have an additional bag for obvious traveling items, it allows it’s owner to have the important Pokémon starting items; including cards with information on the various kinds of Pokémon out there!

2 Weird: Reversible Plush

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

We can see the appeal of a cute Pokémon busting out of its Poké Ball, because that’s what happens in all of the games and shows, but this plush is just very strange. Reversible plushies have been around for a while; sometimes, it’s two animals changing into one another or it’s a creature turning into something else, like the Pokémon. There’s two flaws with the design of the reversible Pokémon. The first is that the ball is supposed to be a sphere, but often times the shape of the Pokémon would leave it lumpy and hollow in certain places. The second is that, because the ball was often attached to the head, the same uneven and misshaped issue would happen to the face of the Pokémon, making the plush itself look odd.

1 Best: Pokémon Center XY Monster Collection

The 10 Weirdest Pokémon Toys Ever Made (And The 10 Best)

The only thing this Pokémon Center is missing is Nurse Joy! This play set allows you to enter that cool space that heals Pokémon after a tough battle. We love that the set is so detailed and has a variety of functions that players can use to really immerse themselves. Particularly having interesting places to put your Pokémon and “heal” them is just a huge part of the fun. Not to mention the center stand is the perfect size for a small Poké Ball to capture your favorite pocket monster. We don’t see a lot of well-done play sets that are specifically for Pokémon, so this is definitely up there on our list.
