The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

When Bellamy Blake makes his debut on The 100, he is cocky, a bit of a trouble maker, and a believer that the delinquents who end up on Earth should be able to do whatever they want. He selfishly looks out for himself at the expense of others. That’s immature but doesn’t necessarily make him a villain.

Over the course of the series, Bellamy grows into more than just a magnetic presence that the teens want to follow. He becomes a real leader, making tough calls and looking out for people. Sometimes, that makes him a hero. Other times, Bellamy is the villain.

10 Hero: Bellamy Protects Octavia

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

There’s a reason that one of Bellamy’s oft remembered lines is, “my sister, my responsibility.” Though he’s incredibly selfish when his story begins, flashbacks reveal that for a long time, his entire world has been his little sister Octavia.

It’s Bellamy who helps hide his sister under the floor and keep her quiet so she doesn’t get found by Ark guards for 16 years. It might drive Octavia crazy that Bellamy tries to keep her on a tight leash on Earth, but he’s so used to looking out for her, that he can’t turn off his big brother instincts.

9 Villain: He Shoots Jaha

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

Before the inhabitants of the Ark come to Earth, Bellamy isn’t one of the delinquents slated to make the journey. In order to get to Earth, he has to pose as a guard and board the ship. He only does that after he shoots Chancellor Jaha as part of a deal.

To be fair here, Bellamy is desperate to see his sister again and he blames the Chancellor for his mother’s death. Bellamy shooting Jaha is probably not the only way he could have boarded the dropship though.

8 Hero: He Infiltrates Mount Weather

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

Bellamy isn’t the only person responsible for saving his friends at Mount Weather, but he tries to get in long before the decision is made to irradiate the mountain as a last resort (and everything changes).

Bellamy is one of the few members of the delinquents who aren’t captured by the Mountain Men. He could have left them and attempted to survive in the world on his own. Instead, he found a way in, formed a tentative friendship with Echo, and helped rally his friends to fight back.

7 Villain: Bellamy Takes The Monitoring Bracelets

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

When the Ark’s delinquents are sent to Earth, they’re all wearing bracelets that monitor their vitals and send information back to the Ark. The bracelets allow those on the Ark to know that Earth is survivable again. Getting the rest of the population to Earth is necessary for the human race to survive.

While Bellamy doesn’t know how bad conditions are on the Ark, he does know that those in political power want to come to Earth, so he takes it upon himself to make them think the teens are dying. He starts destroying and removing bracelets amongst the teens. Bellamy even gets Clarke to remove hers, despite Clarke knowing how important they are.

6 Hero: He Advises Madi On How To Handle Diyoza

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

Despite not knowing Madi well, by the time Bellamy meets her, he has his fair share of experience being in the middle of a massive battle. Bellamy draws on his own experiences as a leader to help convince Madi to find a better way.

Because of Bellamy, Madi tries to find a nonviolent way to negotiate with Diyoza. It’s Bellamy that gets the violence to pause, even momentarily.

5 Villain: Bellamy Tries To Hang Murphy

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

Early in the show, John Murphy is one of Bellamy’s most loyal followers. That changes when Murphy is accused of murdering Wells. Bellamy doesn’t need much convincing to decide that Murphy should hang for his crimes.

It’s interesting because Bellamy doesn’t care much about consequences for people’s actions up to this point in the show. Despite getting along with Murphy and there being no proof that Murphy killed someone, Bellamy kicks the chair from under Murphy when the others string him up.

4 Hero: He Helps Get Josephine Out Of Clarke’s Head

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

When Josephine Prime ends up taking over Clarke’s body, Bellamy thinks he’s lost his best friend. A little morse code from Clarke makes Bellamy realize that Clarke is still alive, and he helps their friends implement a plan to save her.

It’s Bellamy who gets her out of Sanctum’s protective dome and into the surrounding wilderness. It’s Bellamy who takes her to Gabriel to inform him of Clarke still being alive. He’s the reason Clarke is able to survive Josephine sharing the mindspace when it starts to break down.

3 Villain: Bellamy Throws Raven’s Radio Away

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

Not a member of the original delinquents on Earth, Raven Reyes comes to the planet in an old pod and with a radio to contact the Ark. Bellamy makes sure she can’t use that radio to phone home since this is still early enough in the first season that no one knows he shot Jaha.

Bellamy is in self-preservation mode, wanting to make sure he can’t be charged for his crime. It’s understandable that he’s afraid for his own life, but he’s so selfish that he can’t think about what it would mean for anyone else to be able to contact the Ark.

2 Hero: He Takes A Day Trip With Clarke

The 100 5 Times Bellamy Was A Hero (& 5 Times He Was A Villain)

Though Bellamy Blake and Clarke Griffin don’t see eye-to-eye on just about anything in the first season, they do team up for “Day Trip.” The two take a trek to find supplies while the rest of their camp is left to their own devices.

They do find supplies. In fact, they bring back guns and ammo to defend themselves against the Grounders who have been trying to pick off the delinquents. That’s not all that comes out of “Day Trip.” When the two return to camp, they have to take care of the others who have all ingested hallucinogenic berries while they’re away. Bellamy and Clarke also finally realize they have to work together in order to survive. Giving up his complete autonomy to work with Clarke is a big hero moment for him.

1 Villain: Bellamy Sides With Pike

There’s is a deep divide amongst the people from the Ark and the Grounders when the adults come to Earth. Pike and the people of Farm Station have an incredibly bad experience with the Grounders, though the delinquents have learned to work with them. Pike spreads rhetoric or hatred amongst the camp, leading to many taking up arms against the Grounders.

Bellamy sides with Pike, though most of the people he knows don’t. He follows Pike so blindly that he helps to raid a small village that has actually never attacked anyone. Pike and his team kill everyone and Bellamy takes part in the raid.
