Leadership on The 100 means to hold the world on your shoulders. It is hard to do it alone, but how they handle the hardest of situations or changes in their lives can help separate the worst from the best. The sky and ground are filled with leaders, but only a few have made a significant mark on their people.

Jaha, Abby, and Kane were looked at as leaders on the Ark, and their choices influenced Clarke and Bellamy to determine that every life mattered. On the ground, Kane, Abby, and Jaha all changed, too, their perspectives evolving during their time on Earth. The 100 is filled with leaders, but while some devote themselves to helping their people, others fall short.

10 Best: Marcus Kane

Marcus Kane doesn’t earn this title for his early actions. He gains it for developing into a man of diplomacy. Kane’s most significant desire is peace among his people and the Grounders.

Kane understands that sometimes sacrificing your humanity means survival, but they will find their humanity again. Kane holds influence over his people, which is noticeable during their time in the bunker. Kane’s decision to become a cannibal inspires others to follow his lead.

9 Worst: Thelonius Jaha

Jaha understood his actions on the Ark but severely lost himself after reaching the ground. Jaha lost power and the respect of several after being at the helm of the City of Light. While Jaha never regains his Chancellor position, he does remain relevant because of his background as an engineer.

He may have the experience that allows his perspective to be useful to the younger generation, but he has made far too many bad decisions for the wrong reasons.

8 Best: Octavia Blake

Octavia Blake does not earn being a great leader for her actions as Blodreina. Instead, she gained it for her choice to let everyone into the bunker. Octavia could have just let Skaikru take the bunker. Instead, she decided to allow one-hundred members of each clan space in the bunker. Years later, Octavia earns the title yet again for being the reason humanity transcends.

The Being of Light was going to kill all of humanity, but after Octavia convinced everyone to lower their weapons and stop fighting, it showed that humanity was changing. Octavia’s journey allowed a natural leadership to arise from her at the moment humanity needed it most.

7 Worst: Abby Griffin

Abby Griffin’s story starts in a more heroic standpoint and then spirals into the villainous territory without being the true villain. Abby is Chancellor in season two, but her authority is challenged by Clarke’s leadership the moment they are reunited.

Abby spends more time arguing with Clarke than being a leader to her people. Abby remains important because of her status as a doctor, but she never regains a full authoritative position.

6 Best: Bellamy Blake

Bellamy is a leader from his first introduction. Already claiming responsibility for the hundred, Bellamy knows how to inspire a crowd. As he grows, Bellamy loses his selfish tendencies to protect himself and Octavia, eventually caring for everyone.

Bellamy tries to make choices that would best help those he cares about. People follow Bellamy because they believe in him and that he will protect them. Like anyone else, Bellamy doesn’t always make the best decision, but it’s usually clear where his intentions come from.

5 Worst: Bill Cadogan

A world without love goes against everything about human nature. Yet, Cadogan uses that to invent the society on Bardo. Cadogan believes that the only way humanity will transcend is if they don’t believe in selfish love and instead love everyone the same. However, Cadogan doesn’t follow his own teachings.

When he gets a snippet of a memory of his daughter, Cadogan becomes greedy. Wanting to see Callie again, Cadogan tells Levitt to continue digging into Madi’s mind, not caring about how much it may harm Madi.

4 Best: Clarke Griffin

Clarke Griffin didn’t always make the best call, but she was always willing to do what needed to be done. Clarke is one of the most self-sacrificial characters on the show, which occasionally gets forgotten. Clarke is willing to do anything to ensure her people’s safety, even briefly agreeing to have Josephine take full control of her body.

Clarke sacrifices herself to give Emori her helmet and a better chance to survive the radiation. Clarke climbs to the top of the satellite tower to put the power on the Ring. She always bears it so they don’t have to. Nearly all the impossible decisions fall on Clarke’s shoulders.

3 Worst: Russell Lightbourne

Russell Lightbourne lies to everyone. Claiming to be gods, the Primes successfully have tricked the residents of Sanctum into believing that giving up their Nightblood people is an honor. Instead, the Primes kill the person, leaving their body to host one of their own.

The people of Sanctum don’t discover that their beliefs are false until Bellamy reveals the truth. Russell lied to his people, stole Clarke’s body for his daughter Josephine, and was an all-around bad person. As a leader, Russell was not someone to follow.

2 Best: Lexa Kom Trikru

Lexa united the clans when no one else had and invited Skaikru to join the coalition. Lexa wanted unity among her people and agreed to Clarke’s desire that blood must not have blood, a direct contradiction to their way of life. The clans respected Lexa, and she wanted to do the best she could for her people.

However, Lexa also understood that her people were a priority, which made her abandon Clarke at Mount Weather, only taking the other Grounders with her. Years later, after Madi took the Flame, Madi told Clarke that betraying Clarke was Lexa’s biggest regret.

1 Worst: Sheidheda

A good leader on The 100 does what’s best for their people and not for their own selfish gain. Sheidheda’s only love was power. If you didn’t kneel, you died. It was as simple as that.

Sheidheda’s first leadership had been so bad that the Flamekeepers had killed him. When Sheidheda takes over Russell’s stolen body, he has learned nothing from his past. Sheidheda’s biggest desire remains to be in power, and having followers bow down to him.
