Another major gaming event has bit the dust in 2020 due to COVID-19, as the Tokyo Game Show has been canceled. However, a digital event will be held in its place.

The Tokyo Game Show is one of the biggest video game trade shows in Japan and companies will bring their big guns to the event. Sony might have decided to skip E3, but the company has decided that the Tokyo Game Show is still worth its time and was exhibiting new games in 2019. Companies like Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Square Enix are big supporters of the event and the eyes of fans and journalists across the world are always eager to see if any big announcements are made.

The 2020 Tokyo Game Show was one of the last big video game events of the year. According to a post on the funglr Games Twitter page, the event has been canceled due to health and safety concerns regarding COVID-19 and that it will be replaced with a digital event instead.

The event was initially meant to run from September 24 to September 27. There were some fans who believed that this was far enough in the year that it might have escaped the concerns regarding COVID-19, but it seems that September isn’t far enough.

It’s looking increasingly likely that large events will be canceled up until the end of 2020. The question that fans are asking themselves is whether these digital events will become the norm? The upcoming digital events that will act as substitutions for E3 and the Tokyo Game Show might be the thing that kills large gaming events altogether. Events like E3 are expensive to stage and big companies often have to fight for headline space with their competitors. It’s possible that companies will move to Nintendo Direct adjacent presentations, which is something that Microsoft and Sony have already attempted (with limited success). It’s a shame that the 2020 Tokyo Game Show event has been canceled, but it’s hard to argue with the reasoning and the health & safety of everyone involved must come first.
