The twenty-four-hour long Pokémon Sword & Shield livestream has concluded and it appears to have revealed a Galarian version of Ponyta. The biggest question that fans have following the livestream is why it was necessary in the first place, as a brief teaser trailer would have been far more effective and wasted less of their time.

Regional variants were first introduced in Pokémon Sun & Moon, as the tropical climate of the Alola region allowed Pokémon to evolve in different ways, such as Exeggutor being a huge palm tree. The Galar region in Pokémon Sword & Shield will also use regional variants, such as Weezing gaining chimney stacks in the shape of top hats.

It seems that another Pokémon from the Kanto region is receiving a Galarian form, as the twenty-four-hour livestream showed a creature that appears to be Galarian Ponyta. The Galarian Ponyta has a black horn with a white band, a long green and purple mane, and purple fluff around its hooves. It’s still unclear what type Galarian Ponyta is, but it’s likely a Fairy-type Pokémon based on its design. It’s possible that Galarian Ponyta is based on the myth of the Kelpie, which is a shapeshifting horse spirit from Scottish mythology. A video of two of the Pokémon has been captured by the Pokekalos TV YouTube channel and can be seen below.

It’s awesome to see a fabulous new version of Ponyta, but it’s strange that it would debut in such a long video. It would have made a lot more sense for The Pokémon Company to use a brief trailer that showed off the Pokémon in all of its glory, as it did for Sirfetch’d. The Internet quickly fell in love with the smug Sirfetch’d, but everyone is baffled by the bizarre introduction of Galarian Ponyta.

If the developers of Pokémon Sword & Shield were going to use a twenty-four-hour livestream, then there should have been some big pay off at the end to reward the viewer for their patience. Instead, they just wasted the fans’ time with a bizarre video that was like a hellish mixture of an ASMR video and a lo-fi beats compilation, except where nothing ever happens.

Pokémon Sword & Shield will be released for the Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019.
