For the first time since the series itself was ongoing, Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films are something that people are talking about. With the confirmation that villains from those movies, Lizard and Electro, will be featured in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it has made fans rewatch these flicks.

On top of that, there are rumors of Andrew Garfield reprising his role of Peter Parker in the film and even talk of Emma Stone one day playing Gwen Stacy again. When watching these films back, you get a sense of who fans will want to see the most again by understanding who they liked in the first place.

10 Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino

Most audience members agree that 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suffered from the problem of having too many villains crammed into it. Among them was Aleksei Sytsevich (Paul Giamatti), better known to comic book fans as Rhino.

Aleksei Sytsevich was a low-level criminal with minimal screen time but during that time, he was clearly running people over which likely killed many of them. He cared about nobody but himself and Rhino even threatened to injure a child at the end of the film before Spider-Man returned to battle him.

9 Harry Osborn/Green Goblin

Taking a different route from the Sam Raimi films, the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) and not his father Norman, who had already died by the time his son donned the suit. Harry started the story out as being sympathetic.

He had a strained relationship with his father, was isolated when he was sent away for school, and came home just to find out that he was also going to die from the family disease. Although it was wrong of Spider-Man to not try to help him, Harry took this poorly and snapped. He became the Goblin, hurt innocent people, and committed the ultimate sin by causing Gwen Stacy’s death.

8 Richard Parker

You would think that all the villains of the series should rank at the bottom but that’s not totally the case here. Richard Parker (Campbell Scott) actually set his son up for some horrible situations on multiple occasions. For starters, he and his wife left Peter behind, and though their reasons were good, the scene doesn’t make it feel like they cared much.

The goodbye doesn’t even see them say they love him. Richard gets more flak than Mary since he’s more prominent in the story and because of the wild chase he later sends Peter on. Richard’s entire scheme involving tokens and subway is pointless, feels convoluted, and causes his son distress for no reason.

7 Max Dillon/Electro

Although Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx) is one of the many villains in The Amazing Spider-Man, he’s actually something of a sympathetic figure. Max was treated poorly at work, had nobody’s respect, and was often seen as unimportant by even those he thought were close to him.

Obviously, once he became Electro he did some heinous things that make him unlikeable. Despite that, you could kind of understand a lot of where Max was coming from because he was finally pushing back against a life that was rough for him. It doesn’t make what he did okay but it puts him above some other villains.

6 Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard

2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man brought the Lizard to life. As soon as trailers were released, audiences had major questions about the design of the character since it didn’t feel true to the comic books. Still, the characterization of Dr. Curt Connors was a highlight of the film.

As Connors, he was a brilliant scientist who acted as a mentor figure for both Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker. Ultimately, he made a bad decision when it came to the lizard DNA he injected himself with but that was also somewhat understandable as he was desperate to regrow his arm. He was even mildly redeemed by the end.

5 Ben Parker

The origin story of Peter Parker centering on the tragic death of Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) has been seen on the big screen twice now, with this one being the second. This Ben was a bit younger than the Sam Raimi interpretation and it made his bond with Peter feel closer.

The simple scenes involving the two, like when Ben and Peter work together to fix a leak in the basement or when they talk to Gwen, are some of the best in The Amazing Spider-Man. Even his death saw him try to stop a bad guy from doing harm to people, showing that Ben just wanted to be good.

4 Captain George Stacy

Although Captain George Stacy (Denis Leary) is actually something of an antagonist in the first film, he’s certainly not a bad person. George does good daily in his job as a police captain and he’s someone who cares deeply for his wife and children.

He clashed with Peter over Spider-Man but he made more sense at every turn, winning the argument because he was just trying to protect the people of his city. George eventually assisted Spider-Man and made Peter promise to protect Gwen after his death.

3 May Parker

As is almost always the case, whenever Peter Parker needs a parental figure in his life, he has to turn to his Aunt May Parker (Sally Field). In this series, she was very close to Peter and worried about his well-being, though she never confirmed whether she knew he was Spider-Man.

One of the best scenes of the series came in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when she found out that Peter was researching his parents so much. Her passionate plea of him being “her boy” was heartwrenching and it was because the audience appreciated May and her love for Peter.

2 Peter Parker/Spider-Man

Obviously, the main hero of the story is going to be someone who is very likable. This take on Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) was far different from the Sam Raimi one as he was seemingly a lot cooler. This Peter wasn’t the school’s biggest nerd or outcast though he was still something of a loner.

Peter was quick with a quip, making him especially funny, and he was certainly someone who acted like a hero on many occasions. Plus, it was sweet to watch his electric chemistry with Gwen Stacy. The main things keeping Peter from being the most likable are that some of his early Spider-Man actions were out of vengeance rather than heroism and he also went back on his promise to Captain Stacy.

1 Gwen Stacy

One of the biggest criticisms about Sam Raimi’s Mary Jane Watson is that she was simply there to be the damsel in distress who Spider-Man needed to save from a villain. Marc Webb’s films went a totally different route with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) as she was more than capable of holding her own.

Though not a trained fighter, Gwen stood up for herself many times and even played a part in defeating bad guys. She was also incredibly brilliant, cared for Peter when he was in trouble, and had a desire to help others. Gwen was even one of the few people to be nice to Max Dillon. There was nothing even remotely unlikable about her.
