Ava DuVernay’s Naomi TV series could become the key to Arrowverse’s Multiverse future. Ever since The Flash season 2, the Multiverse has been a standard component in The CW’s DC TV franchise. From exploring Earth-2 to many other alternative realities, the Arrowverse spent several years studying the universe. As they continued to develop the universe, this would become relevant for Crisis on Infinite Earths, the biggest Multiverse storyline in the entire Arrowverse. In the five-part crossover, it became a game-changer for the future of The CW’s DC properties. The primary aspect was bringing Supergirl and Black Lightning into the same world as the Earth-1 characters.

At the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths, all the main heroes lived on a shared world known as Earth-Prime. It also allowed the writers to soft reboot the Arrowverse continuity as history has significantly changed post-Crisis. While the heroes still don’t know it, they helped Oliver Queen as the Spectre reboot the Multiverse as well. They think that Earth-Prime is still the only universe that exists, but that’s not the case at all. With Naomi being in development for The CW, the Arrowverse may have found the superhero to reignite the Multiverse storytelling. DuVernay is executive producing the potential DC drama with Arrow’s Jill Blankenship.

Should Naomi get ordered to series, it would be The CW’s latest teen superheroine following Courtney Whitmore on Stargirl. However, Naomi’s premise indicates that The CW might have another DC TV show outside the main Arrowverse Earth. But being on the same network as the other Arrowverse shows, it’s fair to assume that it will more or less have some connection to the larger franchise. Naomi is a relatively new character in the DC Universe after Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, Jamal Campbell created her in March 2019. But as the character’s role within the comics has expanded over the years, Naomi is now potentially getting her own series on The CW, possibly becoming an imperative factor for Arrowverse’s future Multiverse stories.

Naomi’s DC Comics Background & Powers Explained

The story of Naomi McDuffie originated on an alternative Earth in the DC Multiverse. The most significant difference with that world was that 29 people across the world had gained godlike abilities. In this reality, Earth’s ozone layer fell apart due to the human race’s not taking care of the environment. That is why those 29 individuals got affected by the mystery radiation, two of them being Naomi’s parents, who gave birth to her before sending their only child to Earth-0. While some of the people who got their powers wanted to use them to rule Earth, some didn’t want that, which is why an epic war kicked off.

Zumbado, the most corrupted out of those 29 metahumans, found out about Naomi and tried to kill her while she was still a baby. That’s why her parents sacrificed themselves to send her to Earth-0, where Naomi got adopted but kept safe from Zumbado. Naomi lived everyday life in a small town in Port Oswego on Earth-0, the name of DC’s prime universe. But during Superman’s fight with Mongul, the two crashed in the small town, which became a big deal among those who lived there. That became the first time in 17 years that something out of the ordinary had happened, as they don’t feel the more significant effects of the DC Universe.

The last time something unusual happened was when Naomi came to Earth-0, which began the heroine’s journey. Through a message from her biological mother, Naomi learns of her origin and her powers are activated. Naomi eventually faces Zumbado, who had destroyed most of their homeworld. After their first encounter, Naomi would reach out to Superman for his guidance. Having inherited her family’s powers, Naomi can transform into a super-form of herself which comes with several abilities. Naomi can create energy blasts and use her power source to enhance her super-strength due to how much energy exists within her. In her super-form, it allows Naomi to fly and generate the black-gold costume.

The CW’s Premise For The Naomi TV Show

Given that Naomi is relatively new in the DC Universe, the heroine hasn’t appeared outside of the comics in animation, video games, or live-action. However, if The CW goes forward with the show, it would mark Naomi’s first media appearance and live-action debut. In December 2020, Warner Bros. TV announced Naomi’s development before The CW gave it a pilot order in February 2021. Amanda Marsalis is directing the pilot that DuVernay and Blankenship wrote. The CW’s official logline for Naomi describes the DC drama following the teen heroine from “her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse.” The premiere hints that a supernatural event will significantly affect her hometown, which causes Naomi to investigate what caused it. But Naomi’s logline alludes to her discovery being a game-changer as it will challenge everything that they have believed about superheroes.

Army Wives star Kaci Walfall will star as Naomi, and many of the characters from her comics will be part of The CW drama. Cranston Johnson will play Zumbado, while Barry Watson and Mouzam Makkar will portray Naomi’s adoptive parents, Greg and Jennifer. Naomi’s best friend Annabelle will also be part of the series, with Mary-Charles Jones bringing her to life. Alexander Wraith will portray the mysterious Dee, a character in the Naomi comics that is aware of her origins, which seems to be the case for the TV adaptation as Wraith’s character “knows more than he is willing to tell.” While the supernatural event in the Naomi synopsis is ambiguous, there have been reports that Superman will appear in the pilot. Whether or not that is Tyler Hoechlin’s Arrowverse version or not has yet to be clarified.

The rumor suggests that Naomi has thought of Superman as a fictional character before seeing him in the flesh. If this report is accurate, it would be a slight twist to Naomi witnessing Superman in her hometown when he was fighting Mongul. A battle is supposedly part of the pilot, which is how Naomi learns about the Man of Steel’s existence. Whether that villain is Mongul or someone else is unclear at this point. If this is the direction Naomi is going in, it seems to confirm that she doesn’t come from Earth-Prime, where superheroes are known worldwide. Naomi is also not produced by Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti, making even more sense for this show to take place on an alternative Earth. That would allow Naomi to establish its own continuity and depict the DC heroes in a refreshing perspective.

Naomi Can Factor Into Arrowverse’s Multiverse

With signs pointing at Naomi existing on a separate Earth, like Stargirl is taking place on Earth-2, it fleshes out the Arrowverse Multiverse even further. Ever since Crisis on Infinite Earths, none of the shows have utilized the Multiverse as everyone believes that Earth-Prime is the only one after The Spectre’s sacrifice. Superman & Lois is the one Arrowverse show that is toying around with it through Captain Lex Luthor. Stargirl season 2 will have a crossover with John Wesley Shipp, whose Jay Garrick from The Flash will be retroactively changed to have always originated from Earth-2, as the Golden Age Flash on the JSA. At some point in the coming seasons, the Earth-Prime heroes have to find out about multiple Earths existing again. It would be out of character if someone like Barry Allen, a major player in the franchise’s Multiverse storytelling, never discovers this fact.

Since Naomi’s central plot revolves around the character exploring the Multiverse, she could become the hero to play a vital role for the Arrowverse, as they learn that Earth-Prime isn’t the only reality that exists. If Naomi goes forward on The CW, it is inevitable before the teenage hero eventually engages with the other characters in the Arrowverse. Even Stargirl, which started as a DC Universe original, is getting involved with the other shows through Shipp’s Jay as their first crossover. Naomi should, by all means, absolutely be allowed to stand on its own with separate stories in its own world. But it would be weird if a DC show that centers on the titular character discovering the Multiverse never engages with the rest of The CW’s DC shows. It would not need to happen right away as it would be better for Naomi to build up towards getting involved with the larger Arrowverse.

With Naomi joining Stargirl in representing the teenage demographic, it would be fun to see the Arrowverse get younger heroes involved, especially in future crossovers. While Earth-Prime’s Justice League has several superheroes, it mainly consists of young adults and a few middle-aged characters. If The CW orders Naomi to series, the line-up would have another regular teenage character from the comics as their show’s lead. Despite the other series having featured Kid Flash, Jesse Quick, Speedy, Arsenal, Lightning, and more, most of them are no longer involved with the franchise regularly. Even when they were, the majority of them weren’t involved with the big crossover storylines. Naomi would be the ideal character to revive the Arrowverse’s Multiverse angle and help bring in more teenage presence in The CW’s superhero franchise.
