The Avengers formed in Marvel Comics when the Marvel Universe’s top heroes had to come together to battle Hulk. These heroes then decided to remain together as a team, eventually drafted a charter for membership, and eventually grew into one of the most famous superhero teams in comic book history.

By now, almost everyone has been a member of the Avengers, from Spider-Man and Wolverine to the core members who have made up the Marvel Cinematic Universe roster. Here is a look at the first 10 members of the team, in the order that they either showed up or joined the team.

10 Thor

Avengers #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby saw the team form. In this issue, Loki set out to try to see if Hulk could destroy his brother Thor. To do this, Loki cast an enchantment to make Hulk look like he was attacking a train, but he was surprised when the Teen Brigade sent a call for help to the Fantastic Four. Loki intercepted the call and sent it to Donald Blake, who turned into Thor and was the first hero to show up and meet the Teen Brigade concerning Hulk’s rampage. Thor has since been a member throughout most of the Avengers’ history.

9 Ant-Man

The next two members joined at the same time. The first of these is Hank Pym, who at the time was Ant-Man. Pym made his comic book debut in Tales to Astonish #27 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. Ant-Man and The Wasp heard about the call and set out to take the battle to Hulk. Out of the original members, Hank Pym had the toughest time, going from Ant-Man to Goliath to Giant-Man to Yellow Jacket and then getting kicked out of the team after suffering a psychotic break.

8 Wasp

Wasp became a superhero when Hank Pym offered her the same Pym Particles he used so they could work together to find her father’s murderer. She was then Ant-Man’s partner, and the two of them joined the fight and eventually the Avengers at the same time. Unlike Pym, who suffered a downfall throughout his Avengers career, Janet Van Dyne went the opposite direction when she grew from a sidekick to one of the best leaders the Avengers ever had.

7 Iron Man

The final person to take the call when the Teen Brigade sought help with Hulk’s rampage was Iron Man. He showed up and joined up with Thor, Ant-Man, and Wasp to go and find Hulk before realizing that there was a very different enemy to fight.

Iron Man ended up as one of the most famous and longest-lasting members of the Avengers and the man who the MCU focused the team around in the movies.

6 Hulk

In The Avengers’ first issue, the four original members thought they were fighting Hulk, but it turned out that it was Loki who manipulated the situation. The four members worked with Hulk, and they stopped Loki and then decided to remain together as a team. They even invited Hulk to be a member. In the second issue, that fell apart when The Space Phantom set up Hulk again. With the Avengers again thinking the worst, Hulk quit and left the team.

Avengers #4 saw Namor on a rampage, and he accidentally freed the ice that Captain America was trapped in. This was where Captain America thawed and came back to life for the first time since World War II. After he proved to the Avengers he was the real Captain America, they offered him membership, and he joined the team. Captain America was not a founding member, but he is such an important part of the team that many mistake him as one.

4 Hawkeye

In Avengers #16, every member of The Avengers quit the team to get a break, and it left Captain America as the only remaining member, making him the new leader. He looked for new members and ended up bringing in three former villains to redeem themselves as heroes with the team.

Hawkeye actually showed up and asked to join the team and proved he was ready to prove he was a hero, eventually becoming a leader of his own team at one point.

3 Quicksilver

The other two new members of The Avengers were siblings and former villains who worked in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with Magneto. Quicksilver and his sister, the Scarlet Witch, answered the call for new members by sending in a letter asking for the opportunity. Out of the two, Quicksilver was the one that didn’t stick around for too long, as his arrogance and propensity for evil eventually sent him off onto his own.

2 Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch joined at the same time as her brother, Quicksilver, but Pietro suggested that they join the Avengers. However, while Quicksilver eventually left the team because he isn’t much of a team player, Scarlet Witch stuck around for a long time. She has been part of countless Avengers teams and then became an enemy for a short time thanks to losing control in Avengers Disassembled.

1 Hercules

It was over two years before another new member joined the team. Swordsman joined for one issue, but he betrayed the team and doesn’t really count. In Avengers #38 by Roy Thomas and Don Heck, Hercules showed up for the first time. Hercules ended up exiled on Earth and became an associate of the Avengers. Finally, in Avengers #45, the team extended an invitation for Hercules to join them officially, and he accepted, becoming the 10th member to join the Avengers.
