Matt Reeves’ The Batman has drawn a lot of attention for casting more than one villain, and the recent reveal of some scenes taking place in Arkham Asylum explains why it needs so many villains. DC’s movie universe (unofficially titled DC Extended Universe) is going through some major changes after its first wave of movies didn’t perform as expected, and these changes include recasting some heroes. Such is the case of Batman, who will no longer be played by Ben Affleck.

The new Batman will be portrayed by Robert Pattinson in a movie written and directed by Matt Reeves that will be an original, noir-driven story and not an origin one (no more Thomas and Martha Wayne dying, hopefully). The movie, simply titled The Batman, won’t connect to previous DCEU works and is expected to be the first in a trilogy of films centered around the Caped Crusader. It’s a fresh start for the character within the current DC movie universe, and he’s bringing some well-known villains with him.

Details on The Batman’s plot are a mystery, and all there is right now is speculation based on the characters that have been cast so far. The movie already has two villains confirmed and another one close to finding an actor, but the amount of baddies is no longer a surprise now that it has been revealed that The Batman will have scenes in Arkham Asylum. The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane, best known simply as Arkham Asylum, is a psychiatric hospital/prison in Gotham City, where those considered to be legally insane are incarcerated while the rest are sent to Blackgate Penitentiary.

The Asylum has housed many of Batman’s most memorable (and dangerous) enemies, such as the Joker, Scarecrow, the Riddler, Poison Ivy, the Penguin, and more. Arkham Asylum has featured prominently in the many continuities of the DC Universe, including films like Batman Begins and most recently Joker. Because of this, some of its inmates vary depending on the version you watch/read, and some of these include Catwoman – one of the characters confirmed to appear in The Batman.

Zöe Kravitz will be the new Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in The Batman, and will be joined by Paul Dano as The Riddler. One character that has been rumored for months is The Penguin, with Colin Farrell in talks to take on the role, though it hasn’t been confirmed yet. Fans have speculated that The Batman could take inspiration from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s limited comic book series The Long Halloween, in which mob boss Carmine Falcone and his family are hunted by a serial killer known as Holiday, prompting him to recruit various Batman villains to work for him. The Batman has already found its Carmine Falcone in John Turturro, and it’s worth mentioning that in one of the many Batman/Arkham versions there are (that is, Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins), Falcone ended up in Arkham after being driven to insanity by Scarecrow and his fear toxin, so the character has some interesting connections to the Asylum.

Whatever the storyline for The Batman is, the addition of Arkham Asylum, even if just for “a handful of scenes”, certainly sheds some light on why Warner is interested in casting various villains. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see who else will join the cast and if their characters have connections to the Asylum.
