After a long wait, Warner Bros. finally released the first full trailer for The Batman, and while it doesn’t give much away, it does seem to support two big Bruce Wayne theories. Batman has become one of the most important superheroes in comic book history, and as such, he has expanded to other media for decades. Outside the comic book pages, Batman is best known for his history on the big screen, which has had its ups (as was Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy) and its downs (Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin).

Batman became part of the DC Extended Universe when Ben Affleck took on the role in Batman v Superman and Justice League, but this version failed to connect with the audience. Warner later made some changes to its DC Comics content and went for a new version of the Caped Crusader, set aside from the DCEU, and now with Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. Directed by Matt Reeves and simply titled The Batman, the movie will follow a younger Bruce Wayne during his first years as detective and vigilante, and he will come across a couple of notable villains: the Riddler, the Penguin, Catwoman, and Carmine Falcone.

However, the main antagonist in The Batman is the Riddler (Paul Dano), and the first teaser and the trailer focused heavily on him, yet not much has been revealed about his role in the story. This has made way for many theories, and there are two that seem to be supported by the full trailer for The Batman. First off, the Riddler seems to be targeting Bruce Wayne, showing that he knows who Batman really is, and this was hinted at since the first teaser, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the end. The new trailer continues this idea and supports it with details like the riddle towards the end in which he asks Batman “what’s black, white and red all over?… you”, which could be a reference to both sides of the Caped Crusader.

The Batman Trailer Supports Two Big Bruce Wayne Theories

Another big Bruce Wayne theory supported by the new The Batman trailer suggests the corruption of Bruce’s father, Thomas Wayne, is one of The Riddler’s reasons to go after Bruce and other notable citizens. If The Riddler knows who Batman really is, then he surely knows other secrets not only of Bruce but the Wayne family in general. The Riddler’s plan is to expose the corruption that has plagued Gotham for years, and Thomas Wayne could have contributed to the city’s seemingly never-ending corruption. This is supported by a brief scene in the trailer of The Batman where Bruce is trying to piece everything together and one of his “notes” reads “sins of my father??”. It’s also possible that The Court of Owls is involved in all this, given their heavy influence on the city. The Court of Owls is an organized crime group and secret society formed by wealthy citizens of Gotham, who control the socio-economic conditions of Gotham City. This group might have already been teased in the first teaser, in the scene where the Riddler leaves a greeting card for Batman, and it has an owl on the cover.

It’s unlikely that details about The Riddler’s plans and motivations will be revealed before The Batman comes out in March 2022, leaving these open to the interpretation of fans with the little information they have so far. What’s true is that this version of The Riddler is one to truly fear, and cracking his plans and more won’t be an easy task even for Batman himself, and it’s to be seen how much of Gotham’s most obscure secrets The Riddler will expose and how this will impact Gotham and Bruce Wayne.
