The Batman’s Penguin is getting his own TV show on HBO Max, and through it, the studio can make him more like Tim Burton’s version of this villain.

Although he has yet to make his debut in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Colin Farrell’s Penguin is getting his own TV show on HBO Max, and this is a great opportunity to make the character more like Tim Burton’s version of it in Batman Returns. The superhero genre has been dominating the entertainment industry in recent years, and there are two connected universes that have set the example for others: the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC’s Extended Universe. The latter has encountered a couple of obstacles, to the point where Warner Bros. has had to rethink its plans and give some of its biggest characters a fresh start.
The DCEU began in 2013 with Man of Steel, but after the underperformance of Justice League in 2017, Warner changed its vision for the rest of its movies, giving some characters their solo adventures (like Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey) and separating others from the DCEU to give them a new chance, as is Batman’s case. After Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne failed to connect with the audience, Warner is now betting on a completely new version of the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, now starring Robert Pattinson. The Batman will follow a younger Bruce in his first years as Gotham’s vigilante and will feature some of Batman’s most iconic villains, as are Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), The Riddler (Paul Dano), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and The Penguin (Colin Farrell).
Although The Riddler will serve as the main villain of the story, the one who caused the biggest impact when the first teaser for The Batman was released was the Penguin. Farrell is unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot and looks nothing like he does in the comics and other versions of The Penguin, and his role in The Batman remains unknown. However, it seems like he’s going to play an important role in it as Warner is reportedly working on a spin-off TV series focused on him for HBO Max, which will give the studio the chance to make the character more like his most famous adaptation to date: Tim Burton’s in Batman Returns, where he was played by Danny DeVito, and where he was given a tragic backstory yet he remained as a despicable character.
Batman Returns revealed that Oswald Cobblepot was thrown into the sewers by his biological parents after they saw him attack the cat and he scared the nurse upon his birth, as his hands were deformed. Oswald survived and was raised by Penguins living in the sewers at an abandoned zoo. Oswald then traveled in the Red Triangle Circus Gang’s freak show as a child, and decades later, he resurfaced as an adult to run for mayor of Gotham while also planning to kill every first-born son of Gotham’s elite. Cobblepot’s backstory in Batman Returns was tragic and appealed to the audience’s feelings, but his actions were still reprehensible, and that helped make this version of the character so great as it added balance to his story. Now, the new Penguin TV show would follow his rise to power in Gotham, so there must be something in his backstory that can make him sympathetic, like Burton’s Cobblepot being thrown into the sewers as a baby, while also making sure that the audience never forgets that he’s a villain, so his actions will always be deplorable – and, of course, they have to have some coherence with his actions in The Batman.
The Penguin getting his own TV show before his introduction in The Batman speaks volumes about how confident Warner Bros. is in Matt Reeves’ take on the Cape Crusader and this particular version of Oswald Cobblepot, who looks very different from his comic book version and that of DeVito in Batman Returns. Even though they are different, Farrell’s version of The Penguin can learn from what Burton did with the character, and that would be the best approach to the character in order to make him the protagonist while also keeping his villainous side intact.
