Here are the best horror movies on Amazon Prime Video for Halloween 2021. While diehard horror viewers enjoy celebrating the genre year-round, for the masses at large, October is when horror gets the spotlight. Streaming content providers are well aware of this, and tend to make it a point to feature an influx of both fresh horror movies and shows, and classics that never seem to go out of style. Amazon Prime is no different in 2021, having slated four new features in its Welcome to the Blumhouse movie series for October.

Amazon is also debuting a new TV show adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer, which previously became a huge slasher hit in 1997, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and the now mostly inactive Freddie Prinze Jr. The new show is different from the movie in lots of noticeable ways, but it also seems to be retaining a similar spirit, which probably bodes well.

Still, Amazon Prime has more to offer to the streaming horror world than simply its own originals in October 2021. Amazon Prime also has a good selection of great horror movies, both more recent favorites and certified iconic classics, to tempt subscribers looking for a good scare. Train to Busan

A critical and commercial success upon release, Train to Busan sees a train full of passengers – most notably including a workaholic father and his kind young daughter – struggle to survive after a zombie outbreak suddenly takes hold. Halloween isn’t complete without zombies, and Train to Busan is the best Prime Video has to offer.

Midsommar

With its sun-soaked setting and strikingly bright visuals, Midsommar might seem like an odd choice for Halloween viewing, but anyone who’s seen Hereditary director Ari Aster’s 2019 masterpiece knows that behind the bright facade lies a supremely creepy experience. Midsommar is an impeccably crafted piece of folk horror, and those Amazon Prime subscribers who haven’t seen it yet owe it to themselves to go in knowing as little about the plot as possible.

Arachnophobia

When it comes to Halloween iconography, spiders are right up there with black cats and pumpkins as visual mascots of the October holiday. At the same time though, millions of people are utterly terrified of the little creepy crawlies. Should they want to face their fears, 1990’s Arachnophobia is a perfect choice for some Halloween night viewing on Prime Video.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer became the biggest success of the post-Scream slasher wave in the latter part of the decade. The tale of four friends who accidentally kill someone, then cover up their crime before falling prey to a vengeful killer, is well-known, but that doesn’t make it any less effective than it’s ever been. A good option for Halloween time streaming on Prime Video is to pair I Know What You Did Last Summer with its newly debuted TV show reinvention, an Amazon original.

The Monster Squad

A true cult classic, 1987’s The Monster Squad isn’t likely to scare anyone past childhood, but is a spooky fun time the entire family can enjoy – provided said family doesn’t mind a little off-color language. The Monster Squad sees a small town invaded by Dracula and other classic monsters, leaving a group of local horror-loving kids as the only hope to stop the forces of evil. It’s a love letter to the horror genre and those who love it, and embodies the playful spirit of Halloween festivities.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Before he was Pennywise in IT 1990, the legendary Tim Curry was probably best known for playing villain Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the infamous musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Rocky Horror is also unlikely to scare most viewers, but it most definitely isn’t for the whole family, with lots of sexually charged scenes, and scantily clad characters. It’s also got some of the catchiest songs one’s likely to hear in a movie, although some feel Phantom of the Paradise bests Rocky Horror in that department. Rocky Horror might as well be the wild essence of a Halloween party captured on film.

The Fog

When it comes to Halloween movies, they don’t get more iconic than John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween. However, that’s not currently on Amazon Prime Video. What is on the service is Carpenter’s also quite good 1980 effort The Fog, which follows the residents of a small town called Antonio Bay as it’s besieged by the ghosts of vengeful pirates. The Fog teams up Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis with future Halloween 3 star Tom Atkins in the lead roles, with Carpenter’s then-wife Adrienne Barbeau also appearing.

Phantasm

Above all else, Halloween is associated with scares, and few things are scarier than nightmares. The journeys conjured up by one’s subconscious mind can be frightening ones indeed, and it’s rare that a horror movie feels as nightmarish as Phantasm. Like a nightmare, Phantasm’s plot makes little logical sense, and features events that take a flying leap into the realm of the surreal. Still, that’s part of why it’s a classic.

Hell House LLC

Attending haunted attractions is a very popular way to have fun on the days surrounding Halloween each year, and Hell House LLC sets its story in one such place. Since it’s a found footage horror movie though, the attraction found in Hell House LLC is far from a safe place to let one’s guard down and be scared. This is another movie worth going into knowing as little as possible, as the twists work a lot better that way. Hell House LLC has since spawned two sequels, although sadly, neither are available on Amazon Prime Video.
