The first part of the Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion, The Isle of Armor, has finally released. This offers an entirely new island for players to explore, train and relax on, as well as more Pokémon from prior generations to encounter and catch. The fact that these Pokémon were not part of the base game to begin with has been controversial to say the least, but it’s nice to see them return regardless.

There are over 100 Pokémon returning as part of The Isle of Armor, and even more will come later this year as part of The Crown Tundra expansion. With that in mind, here are five of our favorite Pokémon that have made the trip to the Galar region.

Luxray

Luxray is a popular Electric-type Pokémon that makes a welcome return to Sword and Shield. The Pokémon first debuted in Generation IV and is the final stage of evolution for Shinx. Compared to the relatively innocent-looking Shinx, Luxray exudes a powerful aura and electricity to match. Its progression from a cute kitten to powerful lion has made it a favorite among fans.

In terms of the competitive scene, Luxray faces stiff competition from other, more capable Electric-types. This is mostly due to its lackluster defensive stats and poor speed. Despite its flaws, Luxray does have an impressive Attack stat and decent abilities which can help turn the tide in a pinch. Regardless of its competitive viability, this electric lion has a cool design that has given it a solid fanbase over the years.

Lilligant

Isle of Armor is portrayed as tropical island of sorts, so it’s no wonder that it’s full of exotic and beautiful flora and fauna. One such flora is Lilligant, a Grass-type Pokémon that originates from Generation V. Lilligant takes the appearance of a cute plant creature complete with a leaf-like dress and blossoming flower hat. Lilligant evolves from Petilil after being exposed to a Sun Stone and is perfect for trainers who are fond of lovely flowers.

That being said, Lilligant is far from a fragile flower. Lilligant has access to the move Quiver Dance, which boosts a Pokémon’s Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed by one stage. If given proper time to set up, Lilligant can quickly go from a delicate daisy to a savage sweeper. However, it’s important to realize that Lilligant does have limitations, and its pure-Grass typing does leave the blossom in danger from seven other types.

Azumarill

For those competitive trainers looking to reach the top, take note that Azumarill is now available in Sword and Shield. Azumarill is the evolution of Marill and first made it debut in Generation II, while its baby form Azurill came along in Generation III. While it may be hard to believe that a Pokémon with a design like Azumarill’s has any fighting potential, its power can skyrocket provided it has the right team alongside it and the chance to set up Belly Drum. Additionally, its a Water/Fairy-typing gives it an edge over the Dragon-types that seem to overpopulate the competitive scene. However, Azumarill’s low speed can be easily exploited if trainers are not careful.

Magnezone

Despite looking like a toy space ship, veteran competitive players will recognize the utility that Magnezone brings to the table. Magnezone is a dual Electric/Steel-type and the evolved form of Magneton introduced in Generation IV. While its design is a bit of a departure from the original Magnemite line, the magnet motif is still very much present in its appearance.

The reason Magnezon draws so much attention in the competitive scene is its unique ability Magnet Pull. Essentially, Magnet Pull prevents any of the opposing team’s Steel-types from switching out. This is helpful, as it can hold in place and shut down other Steel powerhouses like Ferrothorn and Scizor. However, as is the case with Azumarill, Magnezone’s main vulnerability is its Speed. At level 50, Magnezone will average a Speed stat of 60, thereby placing it at the mercy of much faster Pokémon. Thankfully, Magnezone has defensive stats that’ll allow it to survive a hit or two.

Bulbasaur and Squirtle

When Pokémon Sword and Shield first released, it was obvious that Charizard would be available since it’s the Champion Leon’s main Pokémon, and it was given a Gigantamax form. From a popularity standpoint, it makes sense to include Charizard, since it’s one of the most well-known and beloved characters in the franchise. However, fans hoped this meant that the other two Kanto starters, Bulbasaur and Squirtle, would also be available. Alas, this was not the case.

After months of waiting, justice for the two starters has finally been delivered. Trainers now have the option to choose between Bulbasaur and Squritle in the Dojo after completing Mustard’s first trial. Upon picking one of the starters, new character Honey will automatically walk away with the passed over Pokémon much like Leon with the Galar starter you and Hop didn’t pick.

On top of delivering a nice dose of nostalgia, these Bulbasaur and Squirtle are special: they have the ability to Gigantamax once they’ve reached their final evolutionary forms. This gives them a new design and exclusive Max Moves that’s certain to amaze in battle.
