While there are plenty of reasons to enjoy Leonard Hofstadter as a character in The Big Bang Theory, there are more than a few reasons why his character progression isn’t all too pleasing from the first episode until the very least.

Leonard is an intriguing guy and certainly opens up in a lot of cool and interesting ways during his time on the show, but more often than not, he leaves us scratching our heads. Today, we’re going to run through a few of the reasons why Leonard needs a little bit of a reality check – and what he did in order to deserve it.

10 Cheating On Penny

It may have only been one drunken make out session, but we should never forget the fact that Leonard cheated on Penny.

We’re talking about a guy who quite literally worshipped the ground that Penny walked on for years, to the point where he was obsessed with her. Then, when their relationship is tested in a big way for the first time, he lets her down. Saying it’s disappointing is a huge understatement.

9 Laziness

Everything that Leonard does in the later seasons feels lethargic. It’s not just about his physique changing, although that is relevant, because he also doesn’t seem to care about things quite as much as he used to.

Penny certainly falls into that category, as does pretty much every element of their relationship. Beyond that, though, he just isn’t all too interesting. First season Leonard is the kind of guy that we can all get on board with.

8 Dress Sense

The geeky, slightly ‘indie’ dress sense of Leonard in the first few seasons is really charming – and it’s probably one of the reasons why he has a surprising amount of luck with the ladies.

While he does change his attire in order to suit his growing maturity, it’s almost as if it completely shifts his personality. He has an entitled sense of importance about him, and he starts to carry himself as if he’s more important than just about everyone else in the room.

7 Priya Snobbery

One person can completely change the game in any walk of life, and that’s certainly true for Leonard.

From the way he treats Raj to the attitude adjustment he seems to go through, Priya simply was not the right person for him to be with in any way, shape or form. She didn’t turn out to be a very nice person at all, and unfortunately, Leonard is just too weak or too deluded to recognize that.

6 Reading Penny’s Journal

Being interested in your partner’s past is all well and good, but reading their journal is just a step too far.

At times, it’s really easy to see why Penny is interested in Leonard. Alas, there are still plenty of instances in which fans of the show are left looking at the screen thinking “Him? Really?”. Penny has had her own moments, but she’s never been quite so invasive.

5 Friendship With Sheldon

When you really look into it, the friendship between Sheldon and Leonard is just a bit too toxic for us to handle.

Instead of trying to alter the dynamic between them, Leonard does one of two things: he goes along with the insanity of Sheldon and his controlling ways, or he does everything in his power to belittle him or fight back. There’s just no middle ground, and it’s exhausting to watch.

4 Mocking Zack

He’s incredibly charming, but there is something to be said for how charming Zack can be. As opposed to going down the route of bullying the guys, as many ‘jocks’ like him have done over the years, he takes a legitimate interest in what they do for a living.

In response, they mock him and make him feel like an idiot. Leonard is at the forefront of that, probably because he’s resentful of his relationship with Penny.

3 Walked Over By Howard

For someone that claims to have matured throughout the course of the show’s run, Leonard sure does allow his friend Howard to walk all over him.

Howard seems to have a thing for throwing ‘banter’ in the direction of his closest friends without caring about how they react. On several occasions, everyone wants to see Leonard finally fight back, but it just doesn’t seem to happen. He’s in a great place in his life both professionally and personally, but he still bows down to Howard.

2 Fixing Penny’s Work

Leonard can easily allow Penny to do her own college work and fail or succeed on her own. Unfortunately, his ego gets in the way and he tries to do the work for her.

Some will say that he was trying to do a nice thing for her, but by ignoring Penny’s desires, he’s made it all about him and how smart he is. This is a theme that follows him around for the remainder of the show’s run.

1 Falsifying Data

Raj, Howard and Leonard all chose to put their own sanity and comfort ahead of Sheldon’s when they were in the North Pole by leading him to believe that he’d made a groundbreaking discovery. When he finds out, you can literally see his heart break into a million pieces.

We wouldn’t have argued with Sheldon if he decided to cut them all out of his life, because to be honest, what they did was pretty unforgivable.
