Over the twelve years, fans had the pleasure of watching several friendships blossom on The Big Bang Theory. When the show first began, we watched as a group of nerdy scientists take a Nebraskan actress under their wing. Eventually, the group almost doubled in numbers when Penny bonded with Bernadette and Amy.

While the women of the group did have a solid bond, fans can’t help but question whether it would have lasted in the real world. Looking at Penny and Bernadette’s friendship, here are 10 reasons why the former waitresses aren’t real friends.

10 Penny Didn’t Tell Bernadette Everything About Howard

Penny and Bernadette proved they weren’t as close as the writers led us to believe when they came to blows over Howard’s past indiscretions. This all came about in “The Stag Convergence” when Bernadette watches Raj’s toast at Howard’s bachelor party and is horrified to discover her fiancée slept with a prostitute and his second cousin.

As Bernadette questions whether she should still marry Wolowitz, she turns to Penny and asks why she didn’t tell her about Howard’s weird sexual encounters. Bernadette then storms off, feeling betrayed when Penny says that it wasn’t worth mentioning because she didn’t think their relationship would have lasted in the long-run. Poor Bernadette probably thought people were laughing behind her back.

9 Bernadette Caused An Unnecessary Fight Between ‘Lenny’

When it comes to group games, there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of a competitive spirit. However, all the fun goes out of the window when people start to take it too personal and serious. This is most relatable to “The Scavenger Vortex” when the group splits off into pairs to compete in a scavenger hunt.

As the episode progresses, the viewer sees how far Bernadette would go to win the game. When Leonard says he is going to quit the game because he feels bad about Penny, Bernadette makes him reconsider by telling him Penny believes he is not masculine enough. Since this is one of Leonard’s main insecurities, the scientist becomes mad at his girlfriend. It’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt.

8 Penny Calls Bernadette a Bully

In season 8, Penny’s career takes a change in direction when she quits her job as an actress and becomes a pharmaceutical rep for Bernadette’s company. This all occurs in “The Locomotion Interruption” when Bernadette helps Penny prepare for the interview with her boss, Dan.

Although the interview goes wrong, Penny and Dan bond over their mutual fear of Bernadette. When Dan says that this is the sole reason he gave her the interview, Penny agrees that Bernadette can be a bit of a bully. If you’re intimidated by your friend then why do they hang out together?

7 Bernadette Avoids Penny

Another aspect that could make you question the nature of Penny and Bernadette’s friendship is how insensitive they can be. In this instance, fans would have to cast their mind to the episode “The Anything Can Happen Recurrence” when Bernadette and Amy decide to have a night off from Penny and Sheldon’s complaining.

Penny is hurt to discover that Bernadette lied about working late, instead choosing to go out for a drink with Amy because she is tired of Penny’s complaining about her new movie. Penny then storms out of the restaurant with Sheldon, telling the group that real friends listen to each other’s complaints no matter what. To make matters worse, Bernadette doesn’t even apologize or feel guilty for lying.

6 Penny Puts Bernadette in Awkward Positions

One of the most unfair things Penny did to Bernadette was placing her in uncomfortable situations. In season 4, Penny was disheartened to hear that Leonard was dating Raj’s sister, Priya, and spent most of the time in a rivalry with her. Out of loyalty to Penny, Bernadette and Amy would insult the lawyer about her personality.

However, in the episode “The Wildebeest Implementation”, Penny puts Bernadette in an awkward position when she and Amy ask the microbiologist to spy on Priya during their double date. Even though Bernadette expresses her discomfort with lying, Penny still makes her lie about her career and love life. Penny didn’t like Priya so why did she care what the lawyer thought.

5 Bernadette is Controlling of Penny

Over the nine years, the fans saw Bernadette’s character transform from a sweet and kind microbiologist to someone who was quite cruel and manipulative. This was particularly apparent in season 12 when Bernadette feels like she has the right to control Penny’s career.

In “The Conference Valuation”, Penny and Bernadette get into a fight when a rival sales company is interested in hiring Penny. Bernadette chases off the head-hunting rep and gets angry at the thought of Penny leaving their company, especially when she gave her the job in the first place. Bernadette had no right to hold this over her head. If Penny wanted to leave, it was her decision to make and no one else’s.

4 Penny Threatens Bernadette

In “The Extract Obliteration”, Penny’s character development regressed as viewers saw her become the mean queen bee they had heard about. At the end of the episode, Penny brags to Leonard about the B- she accrued on her college paper and mocks him for not believing her to be intelligent enough.

However, it is then revealed that Penny had got Bernadette and Amy to write the paper for her. Penny thanks the women for their hard work, but threatens to beat them up if they tell Leonard the truth. She also intimidates them into writing her next paper, asking them to get her an A. Who says Penny isn’t a great and appreciative friend.

3 Bernadette Throws Penny Under the Bus

One of the worst qualities about Bernadette is that she would willingly throw her friends under a bus if it meant she would come off as the good guy. The most notable scene being in the episode “The Monetary Insufficiency” when Bernadette lets Penny take the wrap for telling Amy that she hates her wedding dress.

Even though Bernadette promised to stick with Penny on a united front, she soon flees from Amy’s apartment and leaves her to deal with the fallout. It causes Penny and Amy to have a brief falling out, which is soon remedied when Penny tells her that she should wear whatever makes her happy. Karma comes back to bite Bernadette when Amy finds out she doesn’t like the dress either – all which could be avoided if they were “united”

2 Penny Gossips About Bernadette

If a friend tells you something in confidence, that means they trust you enough to not spread their secrets about to others. However, Penny breaks this trust when she creates a gossip circle among their group. In the episode “The Herb Garden Germination”, Amy reveals to Sheldon that Bernadette is thinking of breaking up with Wolowitz.

The news spreads like wildfire among the group as Sheldon and Amy use the information to enhance their social experiment. Poor Bernadette and Howard remain oblivious to the rumors, which could have jeopardized their relationship if they caught wind of it. All this because Penny couldn’t keep a secret to herself.

1 Bernadette Disrespects Penny’s Decisions

Another moment where Bernadette proves to be a terrible friend is in “The Procreation Calculation” as she fails to support Penny’s decision to not have kids. This all came about after Penny and Leonard were at a crossroads about whether they should have children or not.

When Penny comes to Bernadette and tells her that she doesn’t want to become a mother, Bernadette calls her “crazy” and the idea wrong. She then keeps pushing the idea of motherhood on Penny, implying she will only feel fulfilled if she had children – going as far as to take a dig at Penny’s marriage. She was out of line to dismiss Penny’s feelings and make her feel like she was doing something wrong.
