Hughie Campbell is the innocent, doe-eyed do-gooder who accidentally found himself in a war against the superhero manufacturing juggernaut Vought when his girlfriend was brutally killed by A-Train. His love for Robin motivated him to do things he never thought he could, and by the end of season 2 of The Boys, Hughie is a bona fide hero.

The show left off on a very interesting cliffhanger for his character, and it’s clear that he’s going to be very important in the supe war that is rapidly developing. But what should or shouldn’t The Boys’ writers do with his character in season 3?

10 Want: An Understanding Of Victoria

Obviously the way in which season 2 left off implied that Hughie is going to be the main connection to the newly revealed and incredibly scary supe, Victoria Neuman.

Hughie has always been on the front lines of every major storyline, but he rarely takes the lead, especially on something this important. It will be interesting to see what role he plays in the storyline with Neuman.

9 Don’t: Punishment From Vought

Ever since the death of Robin, Hughie has been on a mission to destroy Vought at all costs, and considering that he’s just a regular guy, he’s been doing a spectacular job so far.

However, he’s still just a regular guy, and they are one of the most powerful corporations on the planet. Vought has already tried to punish Hughie once, and hopefully their attacks and attempts to undermine him don’t get worse.

8 Want: An Exploration Of His Abilities

At the start of the series, Hughie proved himself to be much more resourceful and skilled than anyone would have expected him to be, but ever since he got in deep with the Boys, it feels more like he’s just along for the ride.

It would be cool to see him exploit his talents a little more and prove that he is extremely worthy of being a member of this ragtag team of rebels.

7 Don’t: Death For His Loved Ones

Justice for his girlfriend Robin has been the motivating factor for Hughie since the very first episode. While he has moved on with Starlight, clearly Robin still means a lot to him, and getting vengeance for her death is a huge deal for him.

Hughie’s life outside of the Boys hasn’t been explored much, but it would be tragic if he lost any more people to the supes of the world.

6 Want: Development With His Family

Hopefully Hughie doesn’t lose any more innocent loved ones in his war against Vought, however in order for that to even happen, he’d have to have more loved ones.

Considering the fact that Hughie is arguably the protagonist of the series, it’s somewhat surprising that so much of his life and his family has been completely unexplored. It would be nice to get some more insight into how he became who he is in the next season.

5 Don’t: A Breakup With Annie

Hughie and Annie have been through a lot in the course of their relatively short relationship, but it honestly seemed like Hughie might never find happiness again after the loss of Robin, so seeing him recover with Starlight is sweet and inspiring.

Given all that they’ve been through and all that they overcame for their relationship, it would be a little absurd for them to break up in season 3.

4 Want: Respect From The Boys

Well actually, that could probably be amended just to say “respect from Billy Butcher”, however while Frenchie, Mother’s Milk, and even Kimiko seem to have some significant affection for Hughie, they still don’t seem to think of him as quite on their level.

It’s understandable given the role that he has played in their team so far, but it would be nice to see Hughie become more of a team member and gain more respect from the team.

3 Don’t: Moral Ambiguousness

Nearly every character in the show exhibits some level of moral ambiguity, Hughie included, but it seems like a main theme of the story is people who start off innocent and kind wind up becoming jaded and less concerned about the righteousness of their own behavior.

Hughie is one of the genuinely decent people who just wants to do what’s right, and it would be a disservice to his character for him to lose that.

2 Want: Superpowers

Spoiler alert, but in the comic book series The Boys there is a significant plot point revolving around the Boys themselves taking Compound V, and it’s hard to deny that that’d be amazing to see on screen as well.

Hughie is doing really well against Vought all things considered, but having superpowers would make the job infinitely easier, and it would be nice for there to be one more truly heroic supe in the world.

1 Don’t: Death

It seems extraordinarily unlikely that Hughie would wind up dying at this point in the story, but surely many people said the same about Ned Stark, and look what happened there.

It’s undeniable that in the grand scheme of things, Hughie is one of the most easily killed characters on the show, and he needs some significant plot armor to stay alive. But he really shouldn’t lose that armor quite this soon either.
