The Boys Homelander And Queen Maeve Relationship Explained (And Why They Broke Up)

A deleted scene from season 1 of The Boys explains what caused a rift in Homelander and Queen Maeve’s relationship. Homelander and Queen Maeve, The Boys’ versions of DC’s Superman and Wonder Woman, respectively, are both members of the Seven, an elite force of superheroes controlled by Vought International. Early on, it is revealed that they dated each other briefly when Maeve joined the Seven, but broke up due to undisclosed reasons. A deleted scene provides some insight into what may have happened between them.

Though their past relationship is not shown on screen, Queen Maeve’s connection to Homelander is fraught with danger. As he is possibly the most immoral of all of Vought’s superhuman experiments, it’s no wonder they don’t last long. In The Boys comics, Homelander fools Maeve into sleeping with Black Noir, a gross scheme that effectively ends their relationship. Despite any past feelings he may have still harbored for Maeve, Homelander kills her later on in the series when she attempts to protect Starlight.

The Boys’ television adaption offers another explanation for their breakup. In a season 1 deleted scene, Homelander confronts Maeve about the beginning of the end of their relationship. Two years prior, she hesitated to hold his hand during a Congressional Medal of Honor ceremony. Eventually, she took it, but Homelander calls her out on the pause and how, despite appearances, she began to separate herself from him. Maeve counters that they broke up because he “couldn’t keep it in his tights.” With whom he cheated on Maeve is unknown. Maeve insists she never pulled away from him and Homelander is quick to point out her rapid heartbeat, suggesting he’s caught her in a lie.

Maeve likely broke up with Homelander because she fears him. Based on the atrocities he’s committed so far, including opting out of saving passengers from a crashing plane, Homelander is a jealous, evil individual, raised in a lab and emotionally and morally compromised. Maeve even tells her on-again, off-again girlfriend Elena that Homelander literally tore a producer apart after he spoke to Maeve the whole night during an awards party. Try as Maeve might to maintain a cool and calm facade, she knows what he’s done and what he’s forced her to do. Homelander seems to sense her inner turmoil and uses that to his advantage.

In later episodes of The Boys, Homelander outs Maeve during an interview and interrogates her on her relationship status with Elena. Maeve becomes desperate to keep Elena out of the spotlight and away from Homelander since he threatens her very existence. She knows what it is like to date him and how, regardless of their past relationship, he is always monitoring her and her personal life. Despite their on-camera camaraderie, Homelander was and continues to be an absolutely toxic force in Maeve’s life and it’s not surprising she ended things with him.
