Here’s how Billy Butcher will react to his wife’s shocking return in The Boys season 2. When Amazon’s The Boys TV adaptation begins, it’s fair to say that Butcher isn’t in a healthy mental state, even by his uber-aggressive standards. Before becoming a supe-busting menace, Butcher lived blissfully with his wife Becca. Their lives were torn apart when Becca was the victim of rape by Homelander and allegedly took her own life due to trauma. Butcher has been doggedly pursuing Homelander ever since, but he also refuses to accept Becca is actually dead, even going so far as to destroy her gravestone.

In The Boys’ season 1 finale, Butcher’s suspicions are proven correct when Homelander takes him to a secret location and reveals Becca is not only alive and well, but raising the superhero’s child, and this is where the episode ends, leaving the story on a major cliffhanger. The Boys season 2 is set to premiere in September and the cast shared some fascinating details at the recent The Boys SDCC 2020 at home panel. Aside from debuting a hilariously gory clip featuring a speedboat and a whale and confirming that season 3 had already been green-lit, Karl Urban also provided some details on how the Becca revelation will affect Butcher in The Boys season 2.

According to Urban, Butcher will shift from the vengeful mindset he occupied in season 1 to a knight in shining armor type of figure, at least in his mind. Even though Butcher couldn’t accept his wife’s death, this seemed more a defense mechanism than a genuine belief that she still lived. Butcher’s main goal was to get revenge on Homelander, and Urban’s character looks as surprised as anyone during the cliffhanger reunion at the end of season 1. In the SDCC panel, Urban states that Butcher in season 2 is aiming to “find Rebecca and rescue her… get his wife back.”

This reveals a lot about Butcher’s arc in The Boys season 2. Upon finding his wife, it wasn’t clear whether Butcher would be angry because Becca never tried to get back in touch with him, or conflicted because she’d been raising Homelander’s child. There was also a certain amount of ambiguity over whether Becca’s encounter with Homelander was actually consensual, since the villain himself makes this very claim. However, if Butcher’s main goal in The Boys season 2 is to rescue his wife, this implies that Becca is essentially a hostage of Vought’s, cut off from the outside world because her child inherited powerful superhuman abilities. From Butcher’s point of view, Becca is a prisoner, and once he breaks her free, their relationship can continue as before.

Whether Butcher’s assessment of the situation is accurate is another matter altogether. Certainly, Vought hid Becca and her child away from the maniacal Homelander, and it’s still entirely possible that the young boy was a product of sexual assault. But Becca might have wanted to be hidden away, purely for the sake of her child. Even though it meant leaving Butcher behind, Becca could raise her son in a safe environment without the involvement of the father. As such, she might not necessarily want Butcher to ride to the rescue and whisk her back to her former life.
