Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Boys season 2, episodes 1-3.

Amazon’s The Boys season 2 kicked off with the shocking death of Susan Raynor, prompting Billy Butcher to send an unusual gift (an edible arrangement) to her funeral. The sophomore outing picked up where The Boys season 1 left off. With Butcher’s fate unknown to them, the group was forced into hiding after being declared wanted fugitives. Wrestling with limited options, they were drawn back into the superhero conflict when a gang member sheltering them was severely injured. As they investigated, it was revealed that the man responsible was a “supe terrorist” that had been smuggled into the United States.

In an effort to do the right thing (and potentially secure their freedom) the group reached out to Susan Raynor. Meeting with Mother’s Milk, Frenchie, Kimiko, and Hughie, she agreed to look into the situation. Equally, she vowed to do what she could to reunite them with their loved ones. During the meeting, she also appeared to have a eureka moment regarding Vought International and the wider conspiracy. Before she could elaborate, however, Raynor was brutally killed by an unseen assailant. Forced to flee, Hughie and the others ultimately reunited with Billy Butcher. Having no doubt heard what happened to Raynor, he sent an edible bouquet to her funeral service. Glimpsed by Grace Mallory, the gift stood out prominently among the traditional arrangement of flowers.

As random as it may have seemed, the incongruous inclusion was actually a callback. During The Boys season 1, episode 2, “Cherry”, Butcher visited Raynor at her home in an effort to get files on the ill-fated Translucent. Throughout their conversation, allusions were made to their extensive and lived-in history with each other. As well as referencing their sexual liaisons in bar bathrooms, Raynor mentioned a time Butcher had sent her an edible arrangement. She concluded the encounter by not only refusing to help but also vowing to send an edible arrangement to Butcher’s funeral. So in his own way of honoring her, he sent one to her funeral.

Played by Karl Urban, Billy Butcher is driven by an intense hatred of “supes” – especially the extremely powerful Homelander. However, the show’s iteration has more prominently demonstrated moments of genuine humanity. That side of his personality would have been further reawakened by the discovery that his wife, Becca, was still alive. That was why he chose to save Hughie at the end of The Boys season 2, episode 3, “Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men”. The act put not only his own life but also his entire quest for vengeance and a reunion with Becca at risk. Regardless, he emerged from the shadows and faced down the threat of Homelander directly. Though he would’ve buried it deep and such as Mallory declared otherwise, there was most likely a part of Butcher that cared about Raynor.

The pair’s relationship has roots in the source material and is largely more contentious on the page. On the show, however, though they also spared verbally, there was no doubt at least some begrudging respect between them. The fact he recalled a brief conversation so vividly as to follow through on what she planned was a testament to that. As such, while it could be misinterpreted as mockery, it was more likely Butcher honoring her his own extremely dysfunctional way. All the while maintaining the smug, darkly-humored attitude that fans have come to expect. Whether or not Raynor will specifically further his hatred of The Boys’ superpowered people will have to remain to be seen. Equally unknown is if he will personally avenge her death by killing the one responsible. Whatever the case, all will become clear as the remainder of The Boys season 2 is released.
