The Bundesliga German football league is collaborating with esports organizer Battlefy to start the FIFA VBL International Series. The competition will feature both online and in-person events and will be one of the largest FIFA competitions in Asia and the Americas.

The Virtual Bundesliga (VBL) started in 2012 as the first esports competition launched by a professional soccer league. Since then, it has grown to over 130,000 players and has had many successful competitions, such as the VBL Club Championship. Considering that the VBL is already one of the biggest FIFA leagues in Europe, it makes sense to expand it into other profitable territories.

Executive Vice President of Digital Innovations at DFL Group, Andreas Heyden, explained it further, stating: “Combining the online and offline world of football, the VBL International Series merges the passions of a new generation of gamers and Bundesliga fans around the world. This competition is yet another milestone in the Bundesliga’s success story of establishing a leading global esports competition, an asset that further confirms the Bundesliga’s reputation as football’s innovation leader.”

Battlefy will be partnering with the Bundesliga to create the platform for the events. It has a lot of experience coordinating FIFA esports events in the past and will likely be able to handle a large number of competitors from the 21 participating countries.

The VBL International league will start off with Regional Online Qualifiers, which will take place in 19 countries in March 2020. These countries include Brazil, Columbia, Peru, Chile, the USA, Mexico, Canada, and Argentina in the Americas, as well as Cambodia, the Philippines, Brunei, Thailand, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and East Timor in Asia.

The winners of those events will then move on to the VBL Continental Qualifiers in April, where they will represent their region in person. Both Asia and the Americas will have one major continental qualifier. All the competitors will receive the football kit of the official Bundesliga club that they will support until the finals.

The VBL International Finals will be held in May, when all of the finalists travel to Germany to battle it out for the crown. The competitors will be able to interact with some of the professional Bundesliga players and visit some of the Bundesliga clubs.

FIFA is one of the biggest esports worldwide, with FIFA20 reaching 10 million users within its first two weeks of release. Thanks to the Bundesliga, players from around the world will get a chance to play in a major tournament and have the opportunity to be the next FIFA superstar.
