In the most recent episode, The Challenge: War of the Worlds 2 revealed some new and surprising alliances. Leroy Garret is teaming up with Cara Maria Sorbello on War of the Worlds 2. As Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio’s righthand man, Leroy and Cara Maria are often on opposing sides when competing on the same season. If the latest episode is any indication, however, Leroy is switching his loyalty – at least temporarily.
This season of The Challenge pits major US competitors against rivals and newcomers from the UK. Even though many of the returning competitors on the US side are finally playing for the same team, old rivalries and hostilities have interfered in their game. Early on in the season, Johnny Bananas was voted into elimination by his own team, a decision lead by Cara Maria and her boyfriend, Paulie Calafiore. With Johnny voted out, his alliance – comprised of Nany Gonzalez, Tori Deal, Jordan Wiseley, and Leroy – was left without a leader. While Jordan quickly stepped into the role, their numbers were far outweighed by Cara Maria’s alliance, leaving Leroy struggling to choose a side that might help him get through the game. While he spent the past few weeks fighting for “Team America” and pushing team loyalty, his urgency to make a decision increased as the numbers on the other side dwindled. Finally, it seems he’s made a choice.
In the newest episode of War of the Worlds, Leroy teams up with Cara Maria, even though she voted Johnny into elimination just a few weeks earlier. In the clip, Leroy is seen talking with fellow competitors Cara Maria, “Ninja” Natalie Duran, Ashley Mitchell, and Kam Williams about Jordan’s behavior in the house. All participants agreed that while Jordan is a great competitor, his personality makes him one of the most hated members of the house. At the end of the conversation, the competitors come to a unanimous decision that Jordan and Tori are headed for an elimination sometime soon. Leroy then makes his position clear in an interview, where he states, “I’m always screaming loyalty, but maybe I need to get out of the mindset of ‘this is a team.’ I need to align myself with the strongest numbers and right now Paulie is the strongest numbers.”
Leroy’s decision betrays a longtime friendship with Nany, but it also seems disloyal to Johnny, who has a long history with Cara. Early in their Challenge career, Johnny and Cara couldn’t stand each other. Over time, however, they grew to respect one another and even formed a friendship that made them allies during the game. However, their relationship took a turn when Cara started dating Paulie. Johnny expressed serious issues with Cara’s boyfriend, as well as Cara herself when she dates Paulie. His opinions reignited their feud, which is exactly what got him eliminated earlier this season.
While Leroy’s decision may seem out of character, it’s actually what’s best for his game. Many of his past choices have already aligned with Cara and Paulie’s intentions, and their increased numbers mean Leroy’s bound to go farther, potentially making it to a final this time around. In addition, his on-again, off-again love interest, Kam, is also allied with Cara. While Johnny and Nany may struggle to understand his decision, he’s created a good position to potentially get through the rest of this season of The Challenge unscathed.
