Darlene and Ben shared a brutal break up in The Conners season 3 finale, so why did season 4’s wedding episode see the Roseanne star walk down the aisle with her ex? Ever since the Roseanne retooling began in 2018, The Conners has struggled with its recurring cast. After killing off the title character of Roseanne, The Conners switched its title to focus on the remaining members of the Conner clan including John Goodman’s Dan and Sara Gilbert’s Darlene.

However, The Conners still struggles with Roseanne Barr’s exit, and the sitcom has not been averse to creating some forced drama in its recent seasons. Some supporting character arcs have struggled in the wake of Barr’s sudden departure, with the absence of the anarchic titular character resulting in The Conners needing to manufacture drama through tumultuous twists. However, Ben and Darlene’s relationship was one of the more moving high points of The Conners season 2 and 3, which made the wedding episode’s choice to pair them off a little egregious.

In fairness to The Conners, it made sense that Ben was invited to the event as he is still Dan’s business partner and used to live with the family. However, Ben and Darlene going down the aisle together felt like a moment of forced drama, and the choice was blatantly insensitive to Darlene after the pair’s brutal breakup in The Conners season 3 finale. Not only did Darlene and Ben part ways, but the duo did so when Ben turned down Darlene’s marriage proposal in the finale—the same episode where Louise and Dan became engaged. As much as the title family can be crass and thoughtless at times, it seems impossible that Dan and Jackie (among others) would have neglected to remember how raw that emotional wound was for Darlene despite the resilient character’s sardonic exterior.

The episode does not address the issue directly, although some fans saw Darlene and Ben’s reunion as a hint that the duo may be getting back together in future episodes. However, if The Conners does choose to take this path, the Roseanne reboot will need to do more than merely throw the two characters together and force them to interact (particularly in circumstances as tense as Dan and Louise’s hurricane-hit nuptials). Since the pair first got together early in The Conners season 1, Ben and Darlene’s relationship was wracked by their competitive and controlling personalities.

However, the season 3 finale dealt a killer blow to their future when Darlene proposed and Ben proceeded to list his grievances with her. Although Darlene had earlier chosen Ben over returning Roseanne star David Healy, the pair could not work out their differences and parted ways as season 3 drew to a close. As a result, the sight of Ben walking Darlene down the aisle was a touch too much for many fans of the sitcom The Conners. Even those who could accept the character’s invitation to the wedding thought it beggared belief that Darlene would be paired off with her ex during such an intimate and romantic moment. As a result, The Conners will need to pay off the decision by either reuniting the couple or permanently removing Ben from the equation to make sense of the awkward moment.
