Fighting’s an important part of any heroine’s job. The Cruel King and the Great Hero just further reinforces it.

On its surface, The Cruel King and the Great Hero is an easy game. Its turn-based battles are no-frills, featuring a simple enough set of commands that it might have felt at home as a (very pretty) Super Nintendo game. And that’s fine — it serves such ample doses of charm in every scene, as it follows a young heroine who performs earnest tasks for the denizens of a realm, that we’re not convinced a flashier and more choice-intensive system would have benefited the game.

But we did say “on its surface.” So, let’s go over some basics to get you in the groove for those moments when things can get turned on their head challenge-wise. And as you’ll soon read, this does happen.

Pack Plenty of Items

Yuu has nigh-limitless space in her bag, so there’s already good reason to travel heavily. Shells, the game’s currency, might seem like they’re in short supply early on, but that changes after the first few hours. It’s at this point that something changes in the framework of The Cruel King and the Great Hero’s pacing: the high random encounter rate has now blended with slightly stronger enemies all-around, meaning Yuu and her partners are going to be taking more damage per fight.

And that’s with a rough ratio, too; it’s an uptick in damage that somewhat outpaces growth in stamina. Find yourself entangled in enough random encounters before reaching the next safe zone, and you may well begin to feel the burn. Restorative items will become an absolute must in order to keep the journey going without a hassle.

Change Your Focus Per Party Lineup

There are ways for Yuu to attack multiple targets at once, and she’ll learn them at a decent clip. These are great when she’s got a companion, but oftentimes the abilities are from ideal when she’s alone.

The reason for this is that focusing on a single target until they’ve dropped is far safer than spending several turns on the entire enemy squad. You’re reducing the enemy team’s damage output per round by picking off a specific monster in, say, two turns and then moving on to the next. From the third round, Yuu is only getting beaten up by a pair of bloodthirsty little devils.

This changes when Yuu has a partner on her side. At this point, feel free to go ham with the multitarget abilities. There’s an extra “buffer” in the form of the partner’s total stamina (The Cruel King and the Great Hero typically uses that word in lieu of the more RPG-common “HP”) that will help keep our girl afloat for longer.

Treat Boss Fights More Seriously

In a sense, this goes without saying for anyone who’s ever played a role-playing game. Or plenty of other genres, for that matter. But it’s worth talking about in The Cruel King and the Great Hero because this is one of those RPGs where the notion needs hammering home. Boss fights in this game aren’t so much incredibly difficult as they are a big step up from regular enemies. A big enough step that many players will be caught off-guard.

Once Yuu learns Protect, you’ll want her using it in every climactic encounter. Her allies are often better at this sort of stuff before that point, so whoever she’s with can assist in keeping her going with healing items or their own personal abilities if applicable.

There is one particular boss at the conclusion of Chapter Five that will doubtless trip people up if they head into it too bullishly. We won’t spoil the identity of the beast in question, but do try to remember this passage once you reach that point.

Major Grinding Isn’t Mandatory, But Trophy Hunters May Disagree

Grinding levels is far from necessary in The Cruel King and the Great Hero. The number of battles Yuu and her allies must endure will be more than enough to raise your stats to where they’ll need to be. If a greater number of steps were required in the overworld before a fight triggers, we might be inclined to suggest a little extra rough-and-tumble, but as it stands, it truly is not needed.

That said, players on PS4 may feel differently. It all depends on one thing: whether you care to platinum the game. If so, take note that every party member must reach level 50. For Yuu, that will be about twice as easy as the rest of the band — she is, after all, the only permanent party member. Season in the simple fact that only one companion can accompany her at a time, and then top it all off with how late Flora joins since she’s the final ally, and it all boils down to one thing: the task is more grueling for everybody else.
