The DC Universe is full of many terrifying villains, ranging from sadistic clowns to Multiverse-smashing despots, but who among them is the most successful? Which villain – by the measure of their own aims and the enormity of the influence they have on the world around them – is the superior foe out of everyone from criminals like Joker and Gorilla Grodd to forces of nature like Ares and Darkseid?

While the narrative laws of comics make it such that no act of evil can ever really be thought of as permanent – heroes have returned from certain death after literal decades – some villains transcend others thanks to the scale and impact of their misdeeds. Street-level punching bags such as the Royal Flush Gang or the Prankster simply do not have the resources or power to pull off the same schemes that villains like Lex Luthor or Ras Al Ghul can. Most DC villains on their best day can’t pull off the level of suffering that even the failed scheming of the Batman Who Laughs brings about. With that in mind, we’ll be focusing on villains who have shown themselves capable of destroying planets, or even reality itself.

Let’s start with the Batman Who Laughs, aka the Darkest Knight. A Joker/Batman fusion from the Dark Multiverse, he recently obtained god-like powers and is this close to destroying the Multiverse in Dark Nights Death Metal. Going from an orphan who watched his parents gunned down in front of him to a Multiverse-destroying entity is impressive, but judging from upcoming DC solicitations, he’s unlikely to actually succeed in this grand plan, even though he’s caused a lot of suffering along the way.

One villain who has been more successful in his cosmic schemes is DC’s ultimate cosmic baddie: Darkseid. The evil ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid seeks to dominate all life through the Anti-Life Equation, a mysterious force that robs people of free will, making them slaves to whoever wields it. Darkseid has been a thorn in the side of many DC heroes and can easily defeat the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman. He almost brought the Multiverse to its knees in Final Crisis but was thwarted by Batman wielding a god-killing gun. Even as he was dying, Darkseid still got one over on Batman by hitting him with the Omega Beams, which sent Batman reeling through time. But at the end of the day, he failed, the Multiverse stood, and Batman returned to his own time. Better luck next time.

It is Darkseid’s rival, the Anti-Monitor, who is the most successful villain in the DC Universe. Darkseid and the Batman Who Laughs dream of destroying the Multiverse, but the Anti-Monitor actually did it. During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, he destroyed countless worlds across DC’s then seemingly infinite Multiverse, eventually leaving only five. Then, when the heroes went to the dawn of time to stop him, those five Earths collapsed into one. This move completely rewrote DC’s continuity; entire stories, characters and worlds were wiped out of existence. Crisis’ tagline was “worlds will live, worlds will die and the DC Universe will never be the same.” These words were not hyperbole, and the effects of Anti-Monitor’s rampage were felt for decades to come. For this reason, the Anti-Monitor has to be considered DC Comics’ must successful villain.
