The DCEU Is Where The Rock Bautista & Cena Should Finally Appear Together

Although fans would like to see former wrestlers The Rock, Dave Bautista, and John Cena together in a movie, there seems to be no interest on their part for that – but if it’s to happen, the best opportunity would be the DC Extended Universe. The superhero genre continues to dominate the entertainment industry, and it’s still led by the two biggest connected universes: the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. The latter has gone through some issues from the beginning, as Warner Bros. aimed for a dark, realistic vibe that ultimately failed to connect with the audience.

After the underperformance of Justice League, the studio changed its vision and plan for the DCEU, exploring the stories of previously introduced characters a bit deeper (as happened with Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey) and bringing new characters to the mix, such as Black Adam. On the other hand, the MCU has stuck to its formula as it has worked very well so far, and hasn’t had to make any changes to maintain its popularity, and continues bringing more characters from Marvel Comics to the big screen. Something these two worlds have in common is that they have cast three beloved actors who started their careers as wrestlers and have made the transition to acting in recent years: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dave Bautista, and John Cena.

The Rock, Bautista, and Cena rose to fame during their time as wrestlers in the WWE, and they have all made a career shift and become very popular actors. Another thing they have in common is that they have all joined the superhero world, though not all exactly as heroes. First was Dave Bautista, who was cast as Drax the Destroyer in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and reprised his role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, and he’s set to return in Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. John Cena recently joined the DCEU as Peacemaker in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and is getting his own spinoff miniseries, while The Rock will star in the upcoming Black Adam. Now, although there’s no real interest from all parts to share the screen anytime soon, if it was to happen the best option would be the DCEU.

Bautista’s future in the MCU beyond the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie is unclear, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility that he joins the DCEU in the future. Bautista has expressed interest in playing Batman villain Bane, played by Tom Hardy in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and even went directly to Warner Bros. to tell them he wants that role. Even Zack Snyder has offered his opinion on Bautista joining the DCEU, saying he had “other ideas about what Dave Bautista might do in the DC Universe”, but he didn’t offer specific names. On the other hand, if James Gunn sticks around the DCEU either with another The Suicide Squad movie or other projects, the possibilities of Bautista joining this universe would only grow, more so as he turned down a role in The Suicide Squad (rumored to have been that of Peacemaker) in order to star in Snyder’s Army of the Dead. The DCEU, then, could be the perfect place for The Rock, Bautista, and Cena to finally work together, and given how different their personalities and characters are, their dynamic should be fun to watch. As for Cena, his role as Peacemaker will keep him around in the DCEU for a while, and The Rock’s time in the superhero genre is only getting started.

Of course, if this reunion over at the DCEU is to happen, it will take a while. Not only is Bautista still busy playing Drax in the MCU but he also has expressed no interest in working with Cena, though not because there’s some type of rivalry between them. Bautista’s goal is to prove himself as an actor and leave his wrestler image behind, and being paired with Cena would somewhat mess with that, with Cena sharing that he understands his point and doesn’t have “any beef” with Bautista. Until the time comes for The Rock, Dave Bautista, and John Cena to work together, viewers can enjoy their separate adventures as heroes and villains.
